Lariette has experienced communication difficulties her whole life, she's anxious, not well-spoken, and has experienced severe difficulty in making connections the real world. She yearns to live a life like the kind she plays in her favourite video games where you can be friends with anyone and everyone easily. She makes a choice for herself, but the world has another idea for her and she is plunged into Sandrock where she takes on the role of a builder by the same name. She seeks friendship with everyone but especially her favourite character Pen, who she romanced in her past play-through. Pen however, has already met Lariette as her game avatar and is both curious and suspicious of what seems to be an entirely different person based on her lack of strength. Simply befriending Pen however, is not enough, knowing his future leads ends him in a high-security prison means she will have to find a way to deviate the original plot.

In the aftermath of the attack from Duvos and with news of the Alliance's quiet preparation for war (or at least battles like the invasion of Sandrock), Trudy and the Civil Corps decide every townsperson must do regular training - sparring, dummy practice, exercise - in order to be prepared for the threats the future might bring. In the desert, it's always better to be overprepared than the alternative.
Qi's not the biggest fan of this new policy. After all, those six hours of required training each week could be time spent furthering the interests of mankind! But Trudy (and more importantly, the builder) won't brook his argument. Though, when the builder offers to train him themselves, he finds himself agreeing anyway. Just to get everyone off his back, of course...
