It's been a few months since the wedding of Edward and Elinor. The wet spring had turned to a humid summer, then a chilly autumn, to now a snowy winter. The Dashwood girls have all moved out of the Middleton's cottage to their new, respective houses in Deleford. Sir John Middleton misses Colonel Brandon (more than misses him, really, but he doesn't quite realize that yet), and not knowing why he misses him so much keeps him up late at night. Waiting for Christmas with the family has become too much, and he knows he must see the Colonel. What he doesn't know is that, while his occasional encounters with other women (turned nights spent too close for a married man) have kept him sane since his wife's newly found disgust towards intimacy with him, the Colonel is who he truly desires.

She counted down the days until her sixteenth birthday, finding new reasons to support her belief each day. And indeed, on the day of her 16th birthday, she sees herself being carried away in the rain by a stranger, a voice telling her: "‘It is thus it will happen. A member of the aristocracy will save you from sorrow and death. No two tastes were ever more similar, no hearts so alike, no souls with such a similar path to love." Her sister is a prophesy sceptic, but Marianne knows destiny has found her at last when the handsome Willoughby picks her up after she hurts her ankle in the valley near Allenham.

After being dumped by Willoughby, Marianne Dashwood is now on a self-improvement kick. She is determined to mature, to improve her mind by extensive reading and to definitely NOT ever fall in love again. She has firmly ‘friend zoned’ Colonel Brandon. Now married, Elinor wants to see Marianne happily married too. Preferably to Colonel Brandon. While Elinor works to get Marianne to change her mind about ‘no second attachments,’ her task is made harder because Colonel Brandon appears to have lost interest. As Marianne discovers more and more to like about Colonel Brandon, Elinor can’t be sure if Colonel Brandon is even trying to court Marianne now or not!
More ups-and-downs of the Marianne/Brandon courtship, a bit of angst, and while we’re not at the end yet, this installment is mostly sweet, tooth-rotting fluff.
