Oliver woke to Elio curled up next to him.
He smiled to himself and stroked his cheek, watching as his younger lover’s eyes fluttered and then opened. The smile that graced Elio’s face made Oliver’s heart jump. Despite morning breath, he leaned forwards and kissed Elio right on the mouth. Elio’s small moan melted against his lips and tangled his hands in Oliver’s shirt, feet wrapping their way around the older man’s.
“You’re beautiful,” Oliver whispered against Elio’s lips, “when I went home, all I could think about was how I love these lips, love these eyes and these thick, long eyelashes. How I crave to hear your voice, talking about books or music. How I wanted to spoil you and look after you. How much I missed you. God, how I missed you.”
Elio blushed and buried his face in Oliver’s neck, “I missed you too.”

He was back where it all began, where he’d first felt love, of a different kind, of an obsessive, all-consuming and heart-wrenching power that had taken hold of his body and mind and hadn’t let go, not even these years later.

His birthday celebrations came and went in a fanfare of food, presents, hugs and kisses. He had enjoyed it, there was no mistaking that but the hole in his heart made it difficult for him to really lose himself. Sure, the alcohol helped and the dancing and the singing until dawn while fireworks went off in the sky, lightening up the heavens like a messy paint pallet of watercolours, but the creeping loneliness and sorrow of losing him was still fresh in his mind.
He was getting married.
When Oliver had come back to visit to tell them the news, Elio had fooled himself into believing that perhaps their relationship would continue where it left off. But after that messy, desperate kiss and Oliver saying, “I can’t do this”, his heart had dropped into the depths of his stomach and the sickness he felt with every waking moment, the pain and heart wrenching awful feeling that soon Oliver would no longer – if he ever was – be his.

I adored this book, but the ending was very hard to digest. I have decided to write my own (happy) ending, because a love like Elio’s and Oliver’s deserves a happy ending with a vengeance.
I have added more time-related references, but kept political ones to an absolute minimum. It’s more about music, food and the feel of the era.
You will see that at some point the characters go to San Francisco. That part is only referred to, because I have never been there so I didn’t want to write rubbish. I also decided that Vimini should live, because I love her :)
The story is narrated, like the novel, from Elio’s POV.
There is quite a lot of explicit sex, but it’s loving and always consensual. If you do not enjoy M/M sex, please do not read the story (or the original book).Aciman is a genius and I am not, so please forgive my inadequacy. It is all intended as homage to a book I loved rather than an attempt to improve on it.
Last but not least: I have mixed the book’s and film’s references, but I have only seen the trailer as the film is not out yet. If you have seen it, please forgive the errors. I wanted to publish my story before I could be influenced by Guadagnino’s masterpiece.
