"Your ship was destroyed in the storm. I happened to be taking refuge in the reef below when I saw the lightning hit it. The deck went aflame and caved in on itself. You were the only one I was able to break out of the wreckage and bring to this island." The human slumped back into the rocks, scrubbing a wet hand over his face. A few swear words escaped him before he glanced back to Emmrich.
"I wouldn't expect a thing like you to know this, but we humans believe that when a ship goes down, its captain should go down with it." The man grumbled.
Emmrich perked up, choosing to ignore the majority of the human's statement. "You're the captain of the S. S. Rookery?" He tried to crawl closer, but the human jolted back and held a hand out.
"Don't you dare move." His voice was stern and rumbled like the thunder outside. "How do you know the name of my ship?"
...
Milos is a sea captain stranded after his ship is destroyed in a storm. Emmrich, a merman and important scholar of his colony, rescues him. They get a lot more than either suspected from their newfound relationship.

Another bout of silence fell over them. Emmrich brought his knees to his chest and he rubbed at the golden filigrees of his boots. There was something familiar to the way they talked— like they were back in the Apprentice Dormitories, huddled at the space between Johanna's bottom bunk and her nightstand. There, they'd talk about their plans for their future. Her visions were always so much grander than his, and she'd scold him constantly for his meekness; telling him that if he didn't 'grow a backbone' soon, he wouldn't get anywhere in life.
A memory crossed his mind. "Do you remember when we last came here together?" He mused. "It must have been almost thirty years ago, when I was assigned to investigate into that howling skull?"

Emmrich visits Johanna's skull one last time to say goodbye. They have a much needed heart-to-heart.

He'd be lying if he said he wasn't looking forward to the wisp's first dissection, or his enchanter's dissertation, or his induction into the Mourn Watch. Emmrich still had all of his materials from his own apprenticeship; he's certain they'll be of good use. And he could give Manfred pointers on how to word his cover letters! Those were crucial when applying for extracurricular studies.
His potential was boundless, but Emmrich was well aware of the limit placed on their time together.

As far as Emmrich was concerned, there were no rules for when courtship had to end; no overseeing council that determined when a couple was and was not to flirt. Nothing was stopping anyone from courting their spouse after marriage. In fact, the idea was exciting to him: what a pleasure it would be, to continue to pursue and be pursued by his husband. He knew that the trouble they'd get into would be tremendous fun— and at his age, there was seldom else to entertain himself with.
It was a flimsy excuse, but who cares? No one had the right to tell him how to love the love of his life.
