Summary

After all, this was what had kept him awake at night for years; what had made him weep and swear revenge. So why did he still not feel entirely satisfied after everything was over, and his goals all reached?

Jiang Cheng showed Lan Jingyi the training grounds, the barracks, and the dining hall in relative silence. As they turned to the inner section of Lotus Pier, Lan Jingyi murmured, “Your mark is visible.”
Jiang Cheng’s hand flew to the spot just behind his left ear where his soul mark sat, a simple lotus drawn in black lines. He glanced at Lan Jingyi. “Yes,” he said slowly. “We don’t hide our marks in Yunmeng.”
Lan Jingyi looked at him a moment longer before looking away. “It’s a beautiful mark,” he said.
Something strange and warm bubbled in Jiang Cheng’s gut. “Thank you,” he replied slowly. “Are there—have you seen ugly soul marks?”
Lan Jingyi hummed. “Xichen-ge’s isn’t particularly aesthetic, in my opinion, but I would never say that to Lord Nie,” he said dryly, startling a laugh out of Jiang Cheng. When he looked back over at him, Jiang Cheng got the sense that the twinkle in his eye indicated a smile under the mask.

Jiang Cheng is under no illusions--soulmates are not a foregone conclusion--and when Lotus Pier burns, finding his soulmate is the least of his worries.

“Wei Ying,” Lan Wangji breathed out. His heart felt like it was unfolding in his chest. Warm, blossoming hope curling from within and filling the empty cavity that had been cold and gaping since Wei Ying had gone missing.

Lan Wangji comes looking for Wei Ying in Yiling when he and Jiang Wanyin have no success in finding him after vanishing for three months. Lan Wangji was certainly not expecting to find him working as a courtesan. -
