They trekked across a wide cobbled courtyard. Sizhui couldn’t tell which one anymore. He couldn’t tell where they were going.
I’m dreaming.
His palms burned. His heels too. The humid air stung like acid, and the sweat beading in his hands stabbed like molten knives. Looking down, Sizhui could just barely make out the branching red burns rooted in his wrists and spreading to his fingers. He was sure his feet looked the same. That lightning strike had to exit his body somewhere after all.
I’ve got to be dreaming.

“I-” he paused. His sister was still smiling at him, while Wei Wuxian seemed to think he was just that amazing. “Of course I am!” he boasted. “I am the sect leader' son! It'll be so easy!”
“Shijie as well?”
She laughed, covering her mouth with a hand. Even without her wide sleeve, the gesture was so elegant, like everything she did. Jiang Cheng was so proud to have her as his sister.
“Of course, a-Xian.” He looked so genuinely happy at the thought that not even Jiang Cheng had the heart to ruin the moment with a sarcastic comment. “Should I tell you what the secret is before we start? What is it that makes everything work out smoothly, and doesn't let you drown in the first place?”
“Yes!” The boy nodded, enthusiastically, and she leaned in and fake-whispered in his ear.
“Just breathe.”
(Or, the Yunmeng siblings know that, if you just breathe, everything will be alright, even when nothing is anymore and only ashes remain.)

She wanted to scream, scream at the loss of her husband, but she couldn’t bring herself the energy to even grieve properly despite feeling her heart break into a million piece throughout the day, from the very moment she’d shoved her son into the boat, to seeing Jīnzhū and Yínzhū fall, to the sight of the sword running through her husband’s chest, blood on his lips.
None of them had had the presence of mind to check them for a pulse.
