Summary
This essay was inspired by criticisms on assorted fan boards and in articles of BTVS and/or ATS, shortly after both series had aired. It includes a bibliography, footnotes, and arises from my own study of television. It is also incredibly long and split into 6 sections with an Introduction and Conclusion. The focus of the essay is on the pitfalls of the process of making a television show not on the inner meaning of the content or metaphors within the shows - an important distinction and one that distinguishes this essay from all my others. It is a critique of the television medium and BTVS/ATS yet also oddly enough a celebration of them - hope here is fine.
Not exactly certain how to index it. -

Summary
What I find most fascinating about Btvs and Ats is the writers do not limit themselves to one meaning for any given metaphor. They use metaphors to represent a wide range of inter-connecting ideas. Souls aren’t limited to good and evil and having a conscience. If you think that, you’re missing half the show. The thing about the Buffyverse is every time you think you have it figured out, they uncover another layer; it’s a bit like peeling an onion. This is my attempt at understanding what the writers are exploring with their constant references to souls. What are the multiple meanings of the soul metaphor as it applies to these series and what does it tell us thematically and about the characters arcs?

"Welcome to the real world. Lot of fun to be had on the outside. You'll see." (Xander to Buffy in Tough Love, Btvs Season 5, after Buffy just dropped out of USC Sunnydale.)
How many times have we heard this phrase? You leave school and get a job, maybe not your first and Mom and Dad say: "Welcome to the real world." My first reaction upon hearing these words was: "Where the heck was I, in a fake world?"
Buffy is beginning to wonder the same thing. Was the last five years the fake world? If so, what is real? She's been in heaven, she's been in hell, and she's been in Sunnydale, which is real? Is her relationship with Spike, real? Are her friendships' real? Is her sister real? Is the nerdy villain real? She preferred the mystical demon villains of old, the mythic villains. She preferred her idealized romance with Angel and the perfect, dependable solider, Riley. Spike is messy and embarrassing and a royal pain in the you-know-what. (And she hates the fact she needs him.) She preferred the world of Mom and Giles, to a world where she has to work and be the sole support of her bratty kid sister.

Summary
Written in 2003 or thereabouts. An essay about Spike and Angel - vampirism as a metaphor for arrested development, with the soul being a metaphor for growing up.
This is not a debate on which vampire you prefer or which deserves to be redeemed, those aren't the questions that interest me. Any more than I am interested in the whole Spike is evil/Angel is good soul debate. No, I'm interested in different questions - some of which are posed below.
1. What would you do if you were to become immortal? No more physical pain? No quilt? No fear? You have ultimate power - you aren't going to heaven, you may end up in hell but only if you get staked or decapitated or stay out in the sun.
2. What would you do if you were suddenly given the power to hurt everyone who ever hurt you?
3. What would you do if the pain was gone? And you were free to slash and burn?
4. What would hold you back? Would you become the monster?
5. What holds you back now? What do Angel and Spike do?

Buffy and Xander Character Comparison - Dealing with the Monster by shadowkat67
Fandoms: Buffy the Vampire Slayer (TV)

Summary
Buffy and Xander been fighting external monsters most of their lives. The vamps who rise from the grave with fangs or the ugly Master or Adam, ME's version of Frankenstein. These monsters, while scary, they can handle. It's their own internal monster that they continue to fear and struggle with. Perhaps this is why they are attracted to monsters? Subconsciously they seek someone who can overpower or handle their monster? And maybe this is why Buffy has never been romantically interested in Xander? Because she's afraid of what she can do to him? And maybe this is part of the reason Xander has always been attracted to Buffy? Because he believes he'll never be able to hurt her like his father continuously hurts his mother? At least not physically or verbally, she's proven more than once to be a match for him.

Summary
At the beginning of the Spielberg film A.I, a movie about a robot boy who wants to be real, the creator tells his students -he created a robot child who can love. Everyone applauds. Then a woman raises her hand and asks: "But how do we get a human to love a robot? What if the human doesn't return the robot's affections? Is it ethical to create and give someone the desire for love and affection when it will never be returned?" What are the ethics of creating artificial life? This question has been asked over and over again in sci-fi novels and movies.
In Btvs - robots initially are used as objects of horror - the monster robot who can destroy you, then slowly they become humorous or just harmless distractions easily destroyed. But each robot seems real, almost human. And in a show that requires a soul for redemption or for someone to be deemed of value, the use of robots - the epitome of hollow beings is interesting. Robots are nothing but wires and chips and silicon. They aren't real. They can't love. They can't think for themselves. Right? Slaves to man, created by him to serve his needs, whether those needs be physical or emotional.
