Most days she managed to put on a brave face. Being so young, having fallen for her teacher, gotten pregnant, and dropped out of school, she had had to resign herself to living life around the baby’s schedule, rather than her own. The baby would start school in a few years (presuming John agreed to preschool or nursery) and she herself would return to school, intent on working her way to the elusive title of Dr. Lethbridge-Stewart.

With the Doctor ending the relationship, and off travelling through space and time, Alistair needs some time alone to process everything. He can't do that whilst Kate is around, so he needs to talk to his ex-wife about looking after Kate a little longer.
(3 is also known as 'Jon' in this fic because John Smith was the name 3 called himself for UNIT files and such but i wanted to spell it like Jon Pertwee sooo.. but yeah, they'd have to use a regular name for 3 for some situations)

The Brigadier didn’t utter a word, morbid curiosity getting the better of any attempts of comments he might have made.
The Doctor’s eyes were fixated on the door across the hall learning to Katie’s room. ”You know, my dear fellow, I’m fairly sure I promised someone I’d look in on you from time to time. I can’t say I have the faintest idea who, but I’ll look in on her too.” He said, “From time to time.”
The words seemed to escape the Doctor's mind and tumbled over his tongue as if he’d never get another chance to say them.
Like there was urgency behind his words.
Like monsters were waiting under Katie’s bed that he would need to fight.
