The boy squeezes his eyes shut in concentration. Gentle waves of magic run over his body. It looks as if they might seal the wound marring his leg—
—And then they stop.
“Try again.” He works to keep the same commanding tone, even as his stomach plummets.
A few more weak flickers of magic spark and die out. “I—I can’t. That’s all I can do.”
The bleeding has not slowed enough.
Atreus’ voice is hoarse as he whispers the question running through both their minds.
“What are we gonna do?”

Summary
The snow falls lightly, coating everything with a soft layer of its white coating or adding small amounts to the large blanket that has covered Midgard.
Fimbulwinter has been difficult on everyone, and everything. Food is scarce, water is easier all things considered, but the cold has been unforgiving. Many times on these little expeditions has Atreus come across dead animals, either killed or simply starved to death. It’s a normal part of life, of nature, but he still feels sorry for the poor things.

Summary
Instead, he nocks an arrow as he scrambles to his feet. He aims it at the creature ahead of him. It would've been as tall as the trees surrounding them if it wasn't on its hands and knees, inches away from Atreus's face. The creature's figure is fuzzy around the edges, the only part Atreus can see clearly is its eye sockets. They're empty, the sagging flesh around them looking stretched and scarred.

One moment, Atreus is with his father. In the next, he's being confronted by a gruesome looking creature. He runs. -

I probably wrote Atreus as being a little too mature for a 9 year old, but I'm not sorry about it.

In "Mischief and Foresight" Chaper 2, Atreus leads Svadilfari away so Heimdall can talk to the other builder, this is what happens in his perspective.

Svadilfari took a step forward. “Did you try how it feels?”
“Sh– Shapeshifting into this form?” Atreus asked as he forced himself to look at Svadilfari to make up for his undiplomatic behavior. He was being rude. Svadilfari was just being nice. Why was Atreus being mean?
“Not that, sunshine.”
A cold swirl grew in Atreus. It was like a pit that hollowed him out and it screamed danger.
