Instead, she’s pulled into something deeper—into secrets that tie her to the rude and seemingly impossible, Officer Tim Bradford in ways she never could have imagined.

Lucy was sitting on the floor of the bathroom, knees tucked to her chest. It hit her suddenly that she had never seen the bathroom from this angle. The way the sink had a different color underneath it. How the tile was cracked by the corner in the shower. It wasn’t strange that the room felt so unfamiliar, really. She had moved in just a couple of months ago. There was a lot in the house that felt unfamiliar and new.
And now another unfamiliar and new thing was lying on the floor in front of her.

“Lucy, I’m fine. It was not a big deal. Are you okay?” Tim deflected.
“Yes. Yes, I’m okay; you’re the one who bore the brunt of the concrete. How is your spine okay? We need to get you to a hospital! You’re probably in shock… You could be bleeding internally, or have a head trauma–”
“LUCY! Breathe! I’m okay; I have all my limbs, my spine is not broken, and my brain is fine!” Tim took Lucy by the shoulders to calm her down.
“How can you know that? Tim, that was at least 2 tons of concrete; no one would be fine if that fell on a person. You have to at least get checked out.”

Lucy hated how he’d left her hanging. Intrigued her enough to make her squirm, to make her spend over an hour picking the right outfit. He didn’t reveal enough to put her heart at ease. He dipped her head into water, letting the coolness touch her forehead, making her wonder if he would push her all the way under.
Part of her wished he had finished his sentence, so she would have been spared the embarrassment of meeting his new girlfriend. Another part of her wished she had skipped the gala altogether.
