Summary
“Are you feeling threatened, Edward?”
His brows lifted. “By your brother’s cock?”
“By the landladies in our portfolio.” She gave him her best impression of a thoughtful, enlightened manager. A rather Californian aridity entered her voice. “Are they making you uncomfortable?”
Oh, this was adorable. What simpletons had she been practising this entry-level reverse psychology on? “Yes, actually. It does. It makes me feel objectified. Like a show pony. No one should have to feel that way, at work.” Very casually, he played his ace: “If the other lords spoke to you the way some of their ladies have spoken to me, I would be mortified.”

Summary
“I know it wasn’t your idea, Susan.”
“Well it wasn’t Jack’s, either, Captain.”
She had him, there, because it wasn’t Jack’s idea: it was Charlotte’s. Charlotte claimed that, while doing some of her recommended exercise, she’d gone up to Jack’s floor for a visit. Upon reading some of the literature left at his bedside about recovering from traumatic brain injury, she’d realised that a holiday at Halstead was just the thing. It offered clean air and quiet, a full-time staff, and a supportive environment. After all, as Charlotte pointed out, if Jack went back to his flat and tried to resume life as usual, he’d soon be carousing with friends all night and set his recovery back weeks if not months.
(“Don’t you think so, Susie?” Charly had asked her, and Susie blinked her wide blue eyes in the way she only did when another person had a surprisingly good point to make, and Eddie felt the jaws of a trap close down over him.)

Since inheriting his father’s financial debts and assets, he had been working to restore the Horniman fortune to be more than just asset rich. His attention to fine detail was one of the deciding factors his business partner, Susan Glass gave when she handed the task of overseeing their organization's financial records over for him to review. Summary
“That’s a…” The word had slipped Eddie’s mind. He wasn’t good with crashes. Until now, he’d assumed that the accident up ahead was simple human error — a fender-bender, someone texting whilst driving. But if they needed the jaws of life — that was the phrase — it meant the accident was serious. It meant people were dead, or dying. It meant a car flipped over, full of dead people, full of dead girls, in the snow, in the cold, crying, asking why he couldn’t help-
The phone was at his ear before he was even aware of it. “Susie, call me back, please.”

Summary

Summary
“I’m spoiled,” she said, finally.
This was not what he’d expected her to say. “In what way?”
“I grew up in London, and I love living in town, but being here, and the other properties, it’s made me…indecisive.”
“About…?”
Susie shot him a look that told him to keep up. “Real estate, Edward. I keep seeing perfectly lovely flats and rejecting them, because I’m spoiled by being here all the time. They all seem…”
Edward dug his index finger deep into the cuticle of his left thumb to avoid smiling. “Too small?”
