“...Hello?”
Whizzer’s voice was low and raspy, like he hadn’t been awake but not quite asleep either. Like he had been up late. With somebody, or alone. Up late, breathless. Still, he sounded alert. Marvin already felt stupid.
“Hi. It’s, uh, it’s Marvin.” Do you remember? The fag from the game.
“Oh.” Whizzer said, and Marvin could hear the smile already blooming on the other end of the line. “I figured. You know, not many people call me this time of the night unless they’re horny or dying.” Marvin didn’t answer right away. He felt the scotch in his hand and the heat crawling up his neck. His whole body reacted. “Which one are you?”
Well, the situation’s this: it’s 1978 and Marvin takes Jason out to a baseball game. He’s incredibly bored until one Whizzer Brown happens to sit next to him. It’s a terrible place for this and even worse timing, but Marvin always has a hard time saying no to himself.

"Does it matter?" Mendel added unhelpfully.
“It’s been so long since I could tell,” Marvin muttered sarcastically and Whizzer laughed that stupidly nice laugh of his.
Marvin hadn’t slept with a guy in ages. There had been one or two right after Whizzer but... it had felt wrong, it all felt wrong. Besides, he was still trying to figure out how to be a better person. That was hard enough without some new guy tromping around and ticking him off.
But there had been nights during the past two years when Marvin had had to do everything in his goddamn power not to give Whizzer a call. Some of those nights he’d been drunk. Some of them he’d just been lonely, or bored, or itching for an argument. But he hadn’t let himself dial that number he had memorized like a bible verse. Whizzer had made it clear that Marvin was nothing to him, that he didn’t love him, and probably never wanted to see him again.
And Marvin understood. He hated himself for it now, and yet he understood.
But Whizzer was here now.
And Marvin, despite his better judgement, wanted him more than anything.

I love how well this series fills in canon and makes something that would normally be clunky (making the lyrics of the show dialogue) into something so natural and believable. I straight up cried several times reading these pieces. Marvin's internalized homophobia and his struggle against forcing Whizzer into gender norms is handled particularly well and such a nice supplement to the text. I've reread these more than once and will definitely do so again.

Whizzer’s mouth went dry. Goddamnit. He made the man fall in love with him. That wasn’t what was supposed to happen.
What really wasn’t supposed to happen was that Whizzer can’t tell if he loved him too. He felt the need to be around him more often than not, constantly craving the feeling of the man’s arms holding him close, hooking his head on his shoulder.
He did. When he really thought about it, he was fairly sure that he did, infact, love Marvin.
