Adam Chase is a fresh-faced marine biology student in his final year at Yale. He's his families golden boy—or so they say. Determined to change the world for the better, when he signs up for an at-sea internship, the last thing he expects is to be saddled with the mysterious, lonely Captain Denby, who helms The Pelican—a pile of junk disguised as a ship, held together by Denby's own questionable welding skills. Next to him, Ben pipes up, “You two know each other?”
“Well, I don’t think Adam here remembers me, but— Sam Denby. Adam interviewed for me once.”

I was asleep when my mom ran into my room, packing my clothes for me in my new Cotopaxi backpack.
"Mom what are you doing?"
She looked at me and sighed, putting her cigarette out on her hand.
"They are here."
I was confused. I rolled out my light purple comforter and ruffled my long thick blue hair.
"Who is???"
"Your new owners."
This is the story of how Wendover Productions bought me.

A voice breaks through the ringing in his ears, loud enough for Sam to tear his eyes away from the dark clouds slowly overtaking, well, everything. Glancing to his right, there’s a big blurry blob of white, a head with brown hair and glasses (crooked) and— Ben.
There’s Ben.
Sam’s not alone right now.

Summary
There is too much light in this bar, too many widescreen tvs filled with sports and ticker tape, too many boot heels over wooden floors, too much country music (it's classist to hate country music as a genre and right now Ben doesn't care), too many rich white men enraptured by the sound of their own voices, and Ben just wants to drown it all out, wash it away.

Summary
There was something strange about Sam.
Not that he was looking off into the distance and holding a blue flower in his hand. Anyone might do that during a hike. Stopping to smell the flowers was a cliche for a reason. No, there were two strange things. One, Sam’s hat was lying next to him in the grass. Sam almost always kept a cap over his shoulder-length blond hair. Ben had never asked why - he assumed Sam was sensitive about his hair for some reason that was none of his business. Pulling the cap off for a moment to feel the breeze or fluff his hair out was normal, setting it down was not. Also, removing the cap that blocked the sun from his face made the second strange thing more obvious - Sam was sparkling.
