Summary
Strictly speaking, the penguin eggs ought not have come to me: items of natural history are not my field. But they were all part of the estate as far as the lawyer was concerned, and considering that I only survived because Ratcliffe was there, it’s probably for the best that nobody else in the Museum touched them before I did.

I thought I must keep on playing the archaeologist, you understand. If I could draw a sketch in my notebook and make lists, everything would all be all right, and I would be looking at evidence of a historical process, instead of a pool of blood and a mutilated corpse. Let me put it all down as it happened, and I will imagine you sitting opposite me, Booth, talking calmly as you did while I dug Madeleine Stanhope out of the wall in the archives.
Claudia Coburn investigates an archaeological murder.

“I had a lover,” I said. Such a simple, bald-faced truth. It was easier to say than I’d have expected. “Not a man. A—a creature. A demon. He loved me a great deal, I think. He couldn’t help it. He would have consumed me entirely before much longer, but I realized in time what was happening, and I made him go away. And then I forgot him.”

Booth is pleasantly surprised when Ratcliffe invites him to inspect a distant relative's private library. He is rather less pleasantly surprised to find out that said distant relative has been dead for a long time, and that whatever is animating her has designs on Ratcliffe next.

Summary
One truth Booth learned early in life is that the spread of paranormal occurrences is neither fair nor equal. Instead, these forces tend to cluster, resolutely drawn to certain people or places. There are very few people, or places, that draw Booth to them in the same way.

Summary
I spent the hours leading up to the dinner in a state of such distress and panic that I almost sent word to Dr Starkweather that I was so ill I could not possibly attend, no matter the consequences for my career. But I had not the courage for it; and so, as evening drew in, I found myself arriving, in the company of Dr Starkweather, at the home of Mr and Mrs Ronald Norton.
What I saw when I entered the parlour was as I expected; there were about fifteen other dinner guests beside ourselves, all standing about talking with glasses in their hands.
What I did not expect was that one of these dinner guests would be John Pelham Ratcliffe.

Summary
I had not expected to see John Pelham Ratcliffe again.
The circumstances under which we had been reunited had been unusual, and were unlikely to recur. I had no intention of revisiting Brockstone in future, however many more reunions might be held there over the coming years. And Ratcliffe had, despite the consideration he had shown me, made it clear that he did not think particularly well of Dr. Starkweather, and that he intended to avoid any professional association with the Parrington for as long as he could help it.
It was not out of the ordinary for me to enter the Parrington any given morning and hear the murmur of distant voices emanating from the general direction of Dr. Starkweather's office. But on this particular morning, I was deeply surprised to hear such voices. For I found my ear identifying one of them as none other than Ratcliffe's.

Summary
Claudia couldn’t stop thinking about the woman in the wall. Her hand, the piteous manner in which it had still seemed to be grasping for the outside world. The thought of Madeline Stanhope chained up in the basement, watching hope disappear brick by torturous brick at the hands of Havillard DeWitt, all that was bad enough on its own, but worse yet was her fate after death. Booth had been reluctant to speak on it, but leaving such matters to speculation was far worse than any confirmation he could have given. What had the man done to her? What was her existence like, this not-Madeline Stanhope— the creature Claudia had seen, ghostly and demonic with those awful teeth that had so terrified the both of them, was she recognizably the woman she had been before death? Was it better or worse if she was?
