Summary
“The making of language and mythology are related functions,” Tolkien said in his essay “A Secret Vice.” “Your language construction will breed a mythology” (Fauskanger). For him, this was literally true: he was a philologist at heart, and although only the most dedicated Tolkien devotees appreciate his invented languages to the same degree as his narratives, the stories existed so the languages would have a world in which to exist, not the other way around.

Summary
Orcs are, in many ways, one of the most populous and well-known races to come out of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth. They are not long-lived, beautiful, and comparatively wise like the Elves; mighty and courageous like Men; or steadfast and sturdy like Dwarves; but they are memorable, and they appear virtually everywhere in Tolkien’s legendarium—evil, humanoid creatures who exist almost solely to do the bidding of their more evil masters.
