The house, John can assess, is making him a little insane. It reminds him of a stretch in middle school where he kept getting in trouble for - he doesn’t even know what he’d call it. When he was eleven or twelve, it was snapping every pen in his father’s desk drawer, shredding permission slips for field trips to bits. Inexplicable acts of destruction, maybe I-was-here trail-marking for when he needed to find his way back to his life, once it was finished disintegrating.

John and Peter do not look at each other. They both stare straight ahead, at the towering concrete wall of the hospital in front of them.
Finally, John says, quietly, “They never wanted me to be a doctor. They… expected me to fall in line, you know. To succeed my grandfather. My dad never wanted it. My brother died. Chase never had the focus. And somehow, my becoming a doctor became the biggest disappointment of my grandparents’ lives.” Carter laughs bitterly. “Champagne problems.”

Carter clears his throat nervously, avoiding Benton’s eyes. Unable to take any more of the awkward silence, he eventually says, “It’s not as bad as it looks, I swear.”
“....What the hell happened, Carter?” Benton asks finally, sighing.
Carter shifts uncomfortably. The silence stretches on. And then, finally, the dam breaks: “Okay, so. I may have gotten on the bad side of a couple drug dealers."
Based on 4x12, when Carter is trying to help his cousin through heroin withdrawal. A brutal encounter with Chase’s drug dealers puts Carter in the ER as a patient and his personal family business on display for all his coworkers to see.
