“Eyes up, problem child!” A hand seized the back of his costume, yanking him out of the trajectory of another invisible shot. Aizawa’s goggles flashed, red targeting overlay reflected in the tinted lenses.
He’d erased someone.
But who?
Across the mock city block, the “villain” bots lay in smoking heaps, their training rounds untouched. The observation drones above sparked and dropped from the sky one by one, as if something had reached into their code and flipped them off like light switches.
Then he appeared.
A man in a black suit, tie perfectly straight, hair neatly combed. Perfectly average height, perfectly average features. He looked like he should be standing in a bank, asking if they wanted to open a savings account.
Instead he stepped through falling debris like it didn’t exist, hands folded behind his back.
“Target anomaly located,” he said, his voice eerily flat. “Subject: Midoriya Izuku. Designation: Glitch.”
Izuku’s heart stumbled.

Neo stares after him, knowing he’s starting a losing game now.
Or: Neo starts self-isolating, losing faith in being The One. Agent Smith sees this as the perfect opportunity.

Neo remembers fragments: chalk squeaking weirdly on the chalkboard twice, that girl asking in a hushed whisper "You saw it too, right?". They'd carve their promise into a bench under the starry night sky, never to be forgotten fully by either of them.
But promises made as teenagers are fragile things, rarely do they work out and the code of the Matrix would strain that.
Promise turns into Loyalty into Control and into Fear and what it can do when it lands in the hands of the wrong One.
