Summary
Tommy had gone to the war to find one of the people with whom he was meant to be. By the time he'd been driven back to the beach he'd given up any hope of finding either of them. To say that it was a shock when he found both of them in the space of only a few hours was an understatement.
TL;DR: A Happy Soulmate AU where nobody dies and everything (eventually) turns out fine.

There were signs, Tommy knows this now. The hastily tied boots next to a dead man's exposed feet, a too-small uniform that barely kept him warm, especially as it shrunk with cold saltwater, giving him rigid posture and a small but noticeable limp on those last days. The sort of vulpine cunning as he silently directed Tommy to make sure they both looked like soldiers cast off in the first aid ship sunk at the mole, pulling themselves underwater to join the rest of the survivors. Anxious looks that said "if we look the part, we get to go home." Who knows how long he’d been trying to escape this.

He’s not spent six years hanging his whole hat on sailing halfway to Dunkirk, he’s not plagued by the sound of Spitfires in his dreams. He thinks he’s rather moved on from all of it, as much as he can, and the guilt that hits him, when it hits him, is momentary, fleeting. There and gone like those moments when you’re alone, in the dark, and it occurs to you afresh that one day you’re not going to wake up, and there’s not a damn thing you can do about it.
Usually he can bottle it up, store it away inside him somewhere it won’t come rolling back out if he can help it. He can’t today, only half his mind on Aristotle.
The other half of his mind thinks the boy’s eyes were green.

He ends up gliding above the beach, manually cranking out the landing gear so he doesn’t go up in a fiery explosion as soon as he hits the ground. He could glide straight along forever, he thinks, but instead he curves around and lands close enough that he can jog to where the army is waiting to board the boats.

Collins is determined to get him back, come Hell or high water.

As if he could ever be a spy, Tommy thinks, remembering Alex's accusations.
He could read the Frenchman's mind just by looking at his face. What he was reading now, though, was troubling. Tommy began to recall the faces of Englishmen at Dunkirk. They were tense, of course, but more than that they were eager to go home. What Tommy didn't think about was that while the English were leaving for home, the French were leaving it behind.
