Summary
“Hey, I thought I might see you before the big launch,” you call out as they approach you. “Nerves getting the better of you?”
They don't reply, just... look at you for a while. They slowly scan over your clothes, your hands, your face, lingering at your scarred eye.
You arch a brow at them. “Need something, hatchling?”
Eventually, they settle within themself, square their shoulders, and look at you. “Think you can give me a hand with something for a minute?”

This is so good! It really gives every Hearthian a distinct personality, which is insane considering there's like 20 of them. If you're not a fan of large ensemble casts, this one will be a little hard to follow.
Be warned, the Hatchling has serious issues here. Time loops screw you up.
Solanum is potentially my favorite character in this. As somebody who knows toki pona, I think her arc about learning the Hearthian language is really fun to read!
(also, play outer wilds if you haven't already. don't read the fic first, just play it i can't tell you why bro just trust me)

Summary
"There's something down there," you say, as afternoon light catches something metallic in the subterranean caves, something unknown flashes like the sun on the scales of the silver fish that swim in the river outside the crater.
"Gabbro says that before Slate made the big rockets, they used the geysers to help launch the first ships. We were too little to remember. Lots of the first ships didn't make it. The water came up and just blew them apart."
"Gabbro says a lot of things. Gabbro says there are trees that move around when you're not looking at them."
"Gabbro's going to be a real astronaut soon," Hal says, and you can feel their forehead wrinkle in doubt. Gabbro is the best at stories, but they're also the best at tricks and pranks, so it's a tough call which of you is more right.
You both fall into thoughtful silence, and if you squint against the dark and the deep you can kind of identify the silver something as a fuel canister, or maybe a tin of salted fish. But that might just as well be regular old garbage from when the grown ups stay up too late and drink too much, and not the remains of a broken rocket that couldn't make it into space.
It's a thought worth thinking about, though.

“So hey, what do you think happens if you don't jump into the black hole again at the end of this loop?” you say.
“Huh. That’s a good question,” you reply.
You keep standing there, listening to the rush of the supernova as it slowly burns the planet around you.
“Something bad happens, doesn’t it?”
“Something really, really bad.”

Warning: Major spoilers for Outer Wilds base game and DLC!
"A snatch of what might have been music drifted past the Hatchling's ears, carried by the warm and exceedingly gentle breeze that was the most this place seemed able to muster. They strained to listen, ears pricked forwards and body still as a statue. It was like no music they'd heard before on Timber Hearth"
This story follows the Hatchling on their exploration of the Stranger and covers what could happen if you are incautious in the dark. They have to tackle some complicated cultural misalignment and determine what to do about the supernova and their own conflicted emotions all whilst dealing with the time loop, and of course getting down to some graphically steamy business. Absolutely shameless story driven pornorgraphy, but when it gets down it this is a love story, even if that wasn't my intention when I began.
This all takes place when most of the events of the main game are complete, minus the discovery of the Vessel in Dark Bramble. The DLC has been partially explored but it's pretty undefined how much. Also for the sake of story I've been pretty liberal with how long a loop lasts. It's fair to say that a tidy 22 minutes is out the window.

So Gabbro’s always gotten a giggle or two out of a twisted situation. So Shale’s getting more morbid by the hour. So they’re both more than a little sick in the head by now.
All this to say—you can’t really blame them for making the joke, can you?

Summary
Slate frantically ran up the stairs towards the observatory, looking around.
“Mica?” Mica was also just as shaken.
“Slate? What was that?” Their face was frightened as they stared at them.
“I don’t-”
But they cut themselves off as they heard something… almost like whispering at first. But it was getting louder, and Slate realized it sounded like whooshing air.
And what was that bright, blue light?
And why was it getting hotter all of a sudden?
Slate suddenly gasped as a roar washed over them. They frantically looked around them, seeing that the sky was too bright. Impossibly so. It lit up the entire night sky so much that they couldn't see the stars anymore.
But then, it was gone.
Slate stared in confusion and terror at the sky for a few seconds, as if they were waiting for the strange light to return, before they tilted their head back down and looked around frantically.

Summary
Slate was getting ready for the new launch, prepping the rocket and getting everything in order while the Hatchling took their traditional campout under the stars. Of course, Slate always thought that just made the new astronauts jumpy, but what did the know? Not like they've seen every previous astronaut off and they always went a little stir crazy before launch. Although, it was odd really.
Did the Hatchling always stare like that?
