    Summary

Now armed with something to contain Gurathin's leaking fluids, I enter the lab. He accepts the proffered facial tissues with a grateful look, and then proceeds to make a series of somehow even more disgusting noises as he expels his (copious) mucus into sheet after sheet of the thin paper. When he's finally finished, a small mountain of wadded up tissue sits in the bottom of the recycling bin. I discharge one of my energy weapons to incinerate it as a biohazard.

“Woah! Okay, I'm not sure that was entirely necessary…”

“You're sick, Gurathin. Return to your quarters and stop spreading your contaminants across the station.”

    –––

Gurathin has a cold. MurderBot is very bravely overcoming the gross, human, fluid-related ick to care for him, while also trying to figure out why it wants to do that in the first place. Emotions ensue (to everyone's great concern / displeasure).

    Summary

Distantly, Gurathin remembered the union snipers on the upper floors, the drone clouds they'd all coded in case of emergency. The dull ache of his body, sharper on the side of his head, was fighting the painkillers he'd gotten loaded on beforehand. His feed was a panorama of warnings and the empty boxes of blocked ads.

He was cannon fodder with no actual conviction, an indentured systems engineer with expensive augments. The SecUnit advancing over his sprawled shape hadn't come for him - Not really.

    Summary

Why do humans call it a crush, anyway? I’ve seen actual crushing, and it’s not romantic; it’s not even vaguely appealing. In fact, it’s pretty horrific. Same for when humans describe love as “falling” for someone, or say they’re “drowning” in sensation. I remain convinced that most of my Preservation humans are simply too naïve to know what these things actually feel like. But, speaking as someone who has fallen, drowned, and been crushed (although, thankfully not all at once), I can say with authority that being with Gurathin is nothing like that.

    - - -

A series of glimpses into Murderbot exploring its sexuality and the experience of shared touch with Gurathin. The first chapter is pretty mild, but the series will earn its explicit rating in later installments. This work lives in the same world as the first work in the series (Virus), but can be read standalone.

Anyway, it had mostly just been the company reps talking about confidential things in terms I didn’t understand (what the hell was “appropriate division of assets”, anyway?) while me and the other SecUnit just stared at each other.
    I thought about pinging it.

Murderbot is contracted to provide security on a cargo run within the Corporation Rim when a distress call comes in. The crew choose to ignore its entirely reasonable warnings about quarantining alien remnants, so it takes matters into its own hands.

    Summary

A series of short stories to the prompt: pre-canon but post-hack, Murderbot is owned and deployed by the Company. Emphasis on it facing painful, difficult choices, where it has to “choose” to obey, has to “choose” to act governed Or Else, where Murderbot has to look like it’s following callous, cruel, or profit-oriented orders, but still does what it can to reduce harm.

Please note that given the constraints of the prompt, Murderbot continues working, doesn't gain substantial allies or abilities, or make big changes in the world. Its gains are incremental and mainly self-discovery, so there's not a big, happy ending like with most of my fics. Murderbot is still learning some of the abilities it takes for granted by the time we meet it in ASR, including hacking, vocabulary, and social skills (yes, it has fewer social skills here than it does in ASR!)

These scenarios are arranged chronologically with several set within the same assignment, taking place within the first year after it hacks the governor module. I imagine these as incidents it discusses with Dr. Bharadwaj at some point post-NE, as it talks about early times when it recognized its own agency.

Thank you to horchata for helping me brainstorm!

New Tideland runs a writing workshop once or twice a week with a prompt that is one word or a short phrase. We have 45 minutes to write 100-500ish words for submission - any character, any type. Some of these entries fit into my other works but many are their own thing.

A lot of my TMBD fanfiction links together and here I have put them together in a mostly chronological recommended reading list. Most of this is canon-compliant Gen until you get to the Murderathin (MB/Gurathin) stories near the end, after Skulk. That's also where you'll find the only bits out of chronological order, with a couple stories from Gurathin's youth that inform the growing relationship between them.

I expect I could achieve states of boredom humans couldn't even dream of. This comes with not being considered enough of a person to get bored.

Boredom hadn't changed since I hacked my governor module, but now my brain didn't get flash fried when my attention started to wander.

    Summary

After the events of Artificial Condition ART comes across another SecUnit while some of its crew are on a mission.

The SecUnit is headed to their meeting to kill them.

What’s a ship to do but use the code it watched Murderbot apply to a governor module, so it can stop the construct.

Well, it could have killed it, but it thought that would have been rude.

I hate these clients. Worse, this is a months-long survey of this murderous planet. I’ve decided that I fucking hate planets.
Since being unloaded as cargo and starting this contract 5 days ago, my governor module hasn't been activated. I think I’m starting to believe that it won’t somehow activate itself at this point. While usually I meet my clients prior to the start of the contract, this time I was not activated until the contract was set and all the cargo (yes, including me), was unloaded on the planet.
