Summary
After the war, Lan Wangji feels lost and untethered. He has no patience to deal with politics, no wish to appease the Jin Sect as they rise in their ambitions to fill the power vacuum left behind by the fall of the Wen Sect, but all around him it seems as though everyone is ready to bow to Jin Guangshan as the next Chief Cultivator. He is no politician and he has no wish to play those games, but when he and Luo Qingyang come across the imprisoned and tortured remnants of the Wen Sect, he knows that he needs to act, no matter the consequences.

He decides that Wei Wuxian is either going to ask a question, that isn't hypothetical in the slightest or he's gotten tipsy and wants to chat.
What would you do if you were infected by a Consciousness Absorber?
Is the question actually hypothetical?

Lan Xichen and Jin Guangyao, presently in the middle of taking a long, winding walk through one of the many gardens in the illustrious grounds, turned to look just as Nie Huaisang tripped and fell into Jin Guangyao—who caught him, but only barely so.

Summary
In an alternate world where everyone’s cultivation is influenced by the elements, every cultivation disciple falls into one of five affinities: water, fire, earth, metal, and wood.
Except, Wei Wuxian is not a cultivation disciple. He is an impoverished orphan-turned-healer on the outskirts of Yunmeng, healing people in ways no one has ever seen. He doesn’t have a traditional affinity; instead, he has a power that has not been encountered or spoken of in centuries…and it has the ability to change the tide of the oncoming war, or bring the entire cultivation world to its knees.
The problem is, Wei Wuxian does not want to bring the cultivation world to its knees, or be any figure of renown. He simply wants to heal people, reconnect with those he considers his family, and make a dour looking young man from Gusu smile.
Of course, the world does not care what Wei Wuxian wants, and he has to learn the hard way that others may not think his good intentions matter.

Wei Wuxian barely survives being thrown into the burial mounds .
But Wei Wuxian does not survive the burial mounds.
The man that drags himself from that barren dead wasteland can not, in any sense of the term, be called "alive."
But even dead Wei Wuxian cannot rest, cannot leave Jiang Cheng to fight and die alone.
Cannot let his sacrifice and his death be a waste.All Wei Wuxian has to do is make it through the the war without anyone else realizing what he has become.
Specifically without Jiang Cheng or Lan Wangji realizing what he has become.
Once the war is over he can put himself to rest knowing that the people he cares about are safe.
Once the war is over he can die for good.Jiang Cheng knows one thing, He will do anything to not lose Wei Wuxian again. Even if it means going against Wei Wuxian's own wishes he will not be left alone again, he will not lose another person.
Lan Wangji knows that Jiang Cheng sees how sick Wei Wuxian is, Wei Wuxian is sick and refusing help, and yet he refuses to do anything about it, and he refuses to tell Lan Wangji what is going on.

"Aren't you going to tell me what to do?" Wei Wuxian finally asks, more confused than anything else. This doesn't feel like Lan Zhan is trying to turn him into a proper sub at all. He hasn't even issued a single command toward Wei Wuxian yet!
"Do you want me to?"
"It's not about wanting or not wanting, is it? Isn't the whole point of a submission contract that the sub, you know, is submissive towards the Dom? You should tell me to kneel or to beg or to kiss the floor, or at least make me serve you instead of you serving me, or…" Wei Wuxian trails off when he realizes his voice is raised enough to almost count as a shout, and feels ashamed of this unnecessary outburst.
OR: After it is revealed to the whole world that Wei Wuxian, who was raised as a Dominant by the Jiang's, is actually a submissive, he goes to Gusu to seek shelter in a Dom-sub contract with Lan Wangji even though he is not at all sure that he can behave the way that he believes Lan Wangji wants him to.
