    It seems fair they’re the ones who finally take him; after how many times he’s cheated their master, puppeted them along to shrill whistles and sour refrains, it’s only their due to shred his soul like so much cheap silk. When he falls he falls howling, and mad, and steeps the scorched earth in his blood.

    That should be the end of it. The sects hardly dare to believe he’s gone, but every attempt to summon his soul is met with the silence of a still grave. The war is done, the Yiling Laozu is dead, and peace (in time) settles over the sects as though it had never left in the first place.

    But some debts reach past the borders of life… and not all of them belong to Wei Wuxian.

    “A-Yao must tell Lan-gege what this one can do to spoil him just as richly when the appropriate day arrives,” Lan Xichen hums into a kiss to his cheek. Jin Guangyao turns his head from it but Lan Xichen only dips down to press his lips to the jump of his pulse just under his ear, undeterred in his gentle affections by the sudden souring of Jin Guangyao’s mood.

    “Nothing,” he replies, too short, but Lan Xichen is, as ever, entirely too patient for his own good.

    “Nothing, hm? Is it because we don’t have enough time to prepare? I’m sure I can find something lavish to treat you to even on short notice. When is it, A-Yao? In a month? Two?”

    “Yesterday.”

He deserves more than Nie Mingjue’s cluttered tent and dusty bedroll. Jiang Cheng deserves a heated bath and quilts and furs and whatever other luxury Qinghe has to offer. There is little in the way of luxury, however; they are in the middle of a war and Nie Mingjue has never been one to abuse his status to make his life easier whilst his people go without. Abruptly, Wangji remembered the last time a group of cultivators showed up unannounced to the gates of Lotus Pier with demands against Wei Wuxian, and marveled at the foolishness of the jianghu. “They demand entry, Wanyin.”

    His sworn brother’s expression betrayed nothing; until Wanyin lifted a brow, cool and assured. “No-one demands entry to Lotus Pier.”
    -
    Or, after the Jiang are excluded from the sworn brotherhood between Nie, Jin, and Lan; Wangji takes matters into his own hands. This changes everything, and nothing at all.
