First off, i saw a tag the other day that was like ‘[Blank] is Bad at Food’ and together with this description i laugh at how morbidly accurate it is to describe myself. I found this read to be very cathartic, although it was definitely upsetting at times, especially surrounding woo’s treatment of san. it was hard to both understand wooyoung’s mindset and see the way it was impacting everyone around him. I think this story does a great job at getting the habits and inner monologue of someone actively struggling with an ed; they did say it was from personal experience which is for sure evident in the many details specific enough to only be from lived experience.
This is the only Wooyoung San knows, anyway.
(This is the only Wooyoung Wooyoung knows.)ok i loved this line esp! one of the hardest parts of an ed for someone not exposed to grasp is the fact that it is hard to battle not only because it is an illness and an addiction, but because the longer u have one the less it is about the original motivation (of being thinner, in control, self destruction etc) and more about it solidifying as a facet of your identity. you start to forget who u are before you were sick, and recovery can feel like losing yourself and your comfort zone. that is a difficult uphill battle to manage.
i also think this fic does a great job at portraying how an ed is nothing short of an addiction— with it characterized by an addiction to hunger, cravings, relapse, recovery, ties to deeper mental health issues, and change in personality. when i read the book Beautiful Boy i saw so many parallels to an ed struggle, in nick lashing out at everyone and his change in personality to spiteful and suffering. as if by loved ones attemping to help they are gauging into an open wound, and it festers. theres a line in the movie, “someone asked me whats your problem? i said im an alcoholic and an addict, and they said no. thats how you’ve been treating your problem.” from personal experience, to tackle an ed u have to understand where this behaviour stems from— like me avoiding all social interaction my entire freshman yr of college bc i could not stomach being perceived when i was not meeting my standard of ‘thin,’ when in reality, i was spiraling to control this one thing in my life admist the chaotic life change, among other minute factors. i have reached a point where i recognize i tend to relapse into ed habits when i go through a life change, which def helps in mitigating it. Anyways, i dont know what wooyoung’s root cause was in this story, but his struggle is portrayed brutally accurate, esp the fragile cycle of recovery relapse.sorry for the word dump, apparently this drew a lot of feelings out of me. if u read this and it struck a chord just know it does get better. u are strong and u deserve to recover, and i understand the battle fought in silence it can take to do so. let us all be happy and healthy and alive
