By the time he’s made the connection, she’s out of the door, swords and all, nearing her horse and searching for something in her bag. Jaime runs out, and who cares if he hasn’t eaten shit in two days, he can’t let her leave.
“Wait,” he says, “wait, you’re Brienne of Tarth, aren’t you -”
“If,” she interrupts him, her voice suddenly turning cold, “the name Bitterbridge leaves your mouth, I’m leaving you to bleed out on the side of the road.”
Jaime shuts his mouth at once.
People do call her Slayer of Bitterbridge. The story everyone tells is that the local king had called her to get rid of a witch that was causing havoc in his land and that she had killed him, half of his court and half of the villagers.
It was only a year ago or so.
Looking at her, she doesn’t seem like a slayer at all.
“I was about to say that I’m impressed, but do keep on assuming the worst of everyone.”

In which our heroes are in a quasi-Regency Westeros. Jaime is an artist hired to paint a portrait of Brienne for her betrothed Ser Ronnet Connington before they're to marry. Brienne has an unusual request for him. Jaime has an unexpected fascination with her.

Miss Tarth's mouth firms into an unhappy, white line before she looks away from him, gazing out the window at the pale grey December sunlight. Jaime can’t help but imagine the palette he might create: rich blues for the startling gaze; pale yellows for the plainly styled hair; murky, deep greys for the dour silk she’s wrapped in. He thinks he would focus on the play of her plush mouth and soft eyes and how they are so at odds with the crooked line of her nose and stubborn chin.
She breathes out and turns her face to his once more. “Will you--” she pauses and swallows thickly. “Will you make certain that I look as unappealing as possible?”
Jaime has no idea how to respond to such a request. He’s been asked to erase pockmarks, make bosoms fuller, lips softer, waists smaller, but he’s never, not once, been asked to make someone look more unattractive.

She was blinded for a second by a flash, burning her retina and leaving her blinking furiously for a few seconds. When her vision finally cleared, she saw a camera held a few meters away from her face, and a ridiculously handsome man popped his head to the side behind it with a grin that was almost as blinding as the flash of his device.
“What the —” she started, before closing her mouth and blushing furiously. It wouldn’t do for her to tarnish the reputation of the company by letting her big mouth go wild.
But the man only smiled some more, his eyes glinting with something akin to irony. He gave her a courteous mock of a bow and quickly disappeared in the crowd.

‘Just as well,’ Connington grunted. ‘Had she been naked, the bear might have fled in fright! And then there wouldn’t have been any sport.’
Jaime couldn’t help himself. His right arm shot out, and the hook twisted in the front of Connington’s surcoat. He shoved his face into Connington’s with a barely-suppressed snarl. ‘You insulted me. You insulted my wife. You’re a disgrace to the title of knight. Ser Brienne is a nobler and truer knight than you have ever been and hope to be.’ For the first time, Jamie missed the golden hand. He wanted nothing more than to smash the smirk from Connington’s face. He settled for slamming the younger man against a pillar before turning away in disgust.
‘Fucking cunt,’ Connington muttered.
Jaime snapped. He whirled around and his hand flew through the air, curling into a fist. Jaime smiled with grim satisfaction as his fist smashed into Connington’s mouth, and blood poured from his split lip.
