Summary
Rust squints, takes one of those long nihilistic drags of his from his cigarette, like pushing a clock faster with your bare hands. Smoke curls out from his mouth and sneaks up under his ear all secret, and Marty turns his eyes away like he’s been slapped. For a second, before he catches himself, Marty thinks: God, the ass I could pick up if I looked like that.

Summary
The first night Marty gets Rust home and put to bed he whimpers like an old hound dog in his sleep, making these ripped-raw noises that well and gurgle up past his lips like fresh blood from the hole in his gut all over again. Doesn’t know he’s doing it, course not, but Marty lays there next to him in the dark—the man’s only got one bed, ain’t no shame in that—and has to wonder about the Vietnam-grade shit Rust’s got playing in living technicolor in his head.

Summary
A loud crunch, unmistakably the sound of crushed glass, sounded behind her and she turned her head halfway. All of a sudden, before she could comprehend what happened, a hand clamped over her mouth. Her back was slammed against the wall and her heart drummed in panic; she wanted to scream out but the hand was preventing her from doing so. The assailant pressed her against the wall with their body weight and held her still, pinned like a butterfly, and a silver blade kissed her throat. Not to cut, just to freeze her, like a doe in the headlights on a winding country road.

Summary
By the time Rust met Marty, he hadn’t said his own name in ten months.
Longer than that since anyone had called him Rust. Morales, always precise, called him Cohle, or sometimes Officer Cohle, like Rust needed a reminder of which side of the line he was on: Rust had appreciated that. To everyone since Morales he had only been Crash.
Only two people had ever called him Rust. He didn’t like how easily Marty slipped into the number three spot, like it was waiting for him.

Summary
Some little scene sketches from early in Marty and Rust's partnership, and parts of the 1995 investigation. Not in chronological order.
In Louisiana Rust creates his own structure. His work is necessary and not overtly cruel to the larger human organism of which he is a part. He is entitled to the things that allow him to do the work: mattress, cigarettes, books, shoes.
He is not entitled to Marty but has ended up with him anyway. This will backfire.

Summary
Submission is a matter of handling someone. Rust hates to drive but he’s going to need something to do with his hands, with his eyes, some lost hall of memory to fall back into as Marty says, “Gay rodeo,” twitchy in the passenger seat, and, “What d’ya make of that, huh?”
— October 2000, Rust and Marty catch a case that has two worlds colliding.
