Oliver returns to Crema one year after the summer of ’83, desperate to reconcile with Elio and salvage what they once so easily found. But before the walls have a chance to come down between them, nature once again uses its cunning ways and steps in.
Planning a return trip to Italy all those weeks ago had been the easiest decision of his life. There hadn’t been a singular moment of clarity, or a series of events that lead to some long-awaited epiphany – just a dawning awareness that if he didn’t get the chance to so much as lay eyes on Elio again he’d never want to breathe in the start another day. It had all seemed so simple, so finite. And yet standing here now before him in a maelstrom of dismay, Oliver had never felt more uncertain. In the short time they’d been reunited he couldn’t help but feel that his presence just seemed to bring Elio more harm and confusion than anything else.
Of course, the unwelcome sight of Elio forced into a medicated slumber did nothing to alleviate that concern.Series

It’s not Elio’s fault that he has so much pent up anxiety. He’s always bouncing or moving in some way like a restless puppy with endless energy. Except it's really because he's so nervous all the damn time.
Oliver hates it. Hates that Elio is anxious and hates that he draws so much attention to his hands. Whether he’s tapping them on the table or chewing his nails, sometimes he picks at his skin, or just shakes his wrists, he draws too much attention to his hands.
What's worse is how Oliver keeps thinking about grabbing onto them.

Oliver is a Captain in the American Expeditionary Force, part of one of the first American companies to make it over to France in the Autumn of 1917. He's only been in France for three weeks, and nothing could have prepared him for what he finds there; the trenches, the mud, the death, the noise, and the violence. Surely he is in hell.
Elio is a medic in the French army, having joined up as soon as he could after his eighteenth birthday. He'd wanted to do his part. He's been at the front and in support for over a year, and has seen friends and fellow soldiers die en masse. He thinks he is hardened to the horrors of war.
Both of them need something to remind that the entire world hasn't fallen into darkness, that there is light and hope to be found somewhere. When they are thrown together by circumstance, will they be able to find that hope in each other?

Disclaimer: I could not find a title I liked for this piece. I did not read the book.
Summary: The memories may have taken on a crystalline quality, too perfect, too smoothed over or faded into things that weren’t truly there at the time. I admit I assumed they had. I assumed that the way each corner of my lungs seemed full of him was an illusion of art and memory, poetry writing itself. Romanticism for those who roll their eyes at such nonsense.
Author’s Notes: I like long, happy stories these days, but I don’t enjoy unreality in them, off-kilter characters, vastly improbable events. So this story isn’t a fix-it, it does not have much happiness, nor does it drip with resplendent greenery. If you need to avoid reality by all means avoid this tale. -
