Honestly, Shin’s not even the one turning the volume dial on other people’s brainwaves. He can direct his ESP, but thoughts with stronger emotions always stick out more to both whoever’s thinking them and Shin, the glint of a dagger in the butter knife drawer. Then it gets stuck in his head. The most recent case is seeing Mafuyu watch his big brother stand up to his father and get smacked across the face with a sound that rang out like an unmuffled gunshot. The kind of hit that’s to send a message, not to complete a job.
Seba Natsuki has never been Shin's first choice for a conversation partner, but there's no one else he can ask about a memory that's been bothering him since the Assassin Exhibition of the Century. Shin wishes that the fact that it's actually Seba's memory is the important bit, but the thing that's really bothering him is that Seba's dad was there too. Shin's dad wasn't in most of his childhood memories except for a few very important ones.
So he has to ask.

The JCC is out of comission, and now, half the students have been displaced, what with the academic year being put on hold.
Natsuki Seba, with whom Shin has steadily formed a strong sense of companionship over the short period of time he'd been enrolled in the school, and his younger brother spare no time in hauling ass and getting as far away as possible from their parents.Which lands them three minutes from the Sakamoto store. Which means a whole lot more of Natsuki, and a whole lot more of Shin battling feelings that have no business in invading whatever it is he and Natsuki already have going on.

Lu knows she’s not the most perceptive person in the entire world. She forgets where she last saw the flour and sugar. She doesn’t notice when they’ve run out of muffins and she needs to make more. She doesn’t notice when she accidentally grabs Shin’s apron instead of her own.
So the fact that she notices the same person come in almost every day, ordering the same thing, and then talk to Shin for way longer than she’s ever seen Shin talk to a customer is interesting in itself.
