“Headfirst Slide” was a little bit different: Pete knew the fans had grown to love Folie, he still loves that album himself, but remembering the shows where he had to shield Patrick from being pelted by flying glow sticks still makes him wince. So Pete agreed, but it was a trial run, a test, just to see.
And fuck, it went over even better than “Calm Before the Storm.”
"Headfirst Slide" has a permanent place on the setlist. It's reawakening some not-so-buried feelings in Pete.

Even in the best of circumstances, when he's firing on all cylinders and his brain isn't at least half offline, reduced to a nice buzzing at the back of his skull, Pete is hard pressed to remember any time in the previous two decades when Patrick has ever just let things between them go without pushback, the chafe of their conflicting personalities a friction he trusts almost more than gravity holding him to the earth.

Joe snorts and doesn’t look up from his phone. Andy grins and shakes his head. Patrick pats his knee absentmindedly. “That’ll be a great 8-ball. The kids will love it.”
Pete smacks his hand away, pouting. “What? No! Were you not listening to me?”
Patrick frowns, pulls his headphones off. “Is that a trick question, or…"

Summary
“Yeah, sorry, just-” Pete huffs out a breath and leans in closer. “Planning my approach. There’s tactics involved,” He’s bluffing, mostly, half-joking - but he is, suddenly, very close to Patrick. He’s bracing one hand on the cushions just by Patrick’s head, kneeling next to him on the couch, and when he leans in enough to see the smudged traces of the makeup - he’s not at the right angle to feel the warmth of Patrick’s breath, but he’s basically close enough.
Patrick’s eye closes again, and Pete leans just that last little bit closer as brings up the cloth to brush it gently over Patrick’s eyelid.
Pete helps Patrick get his makeup off after the Halloween show. Then some other stuff happens. (Mostly talking)

“Terrible? Awful? Insulting to our integrity as artists?” Patrick says skeptically, shoving a roll of sushi into his mouth, words muffled through a mouthful of rice. “I could listen to thirty minutes of cat pissing and it would probably be more enjoyable than that record. I’m not subjecting myself to that. I’m not subjecting our fans to that. No one who pays for a concert should be forced to listen to that symphonic trainwreck of an album, we should have burned every copy of it when-”
“OK! I get it!” Pete shoves another sushi into Patrick’s mouth to shut him up. He chews mutinously for several seconds, glaring at Pete, before swallowing. “Please don’t mention this to me again.”

Summary
The worst part of performing, besides post-show blues, was the sweat. Pete’s hair stuck to his forehead, his back, his neck, and he resisted every urge to scrape it away petulantly while he was still on stage. The band was in the middle of the last song, pre-encore, and he was just…exhausted. It wasn’t the full body ache he got after every show, every muscle screaming from being bent and twisted as Pete jumped around onstage. It wasn’t the mental exhaustion that comes at the end of every tour, nor the physical drag from insomnia.
It was just that Pete had fallen in love again. Pete had fallen in love with Patrick again. -

Pete squeezed his eyes shut and tried to focus on playing. He was a grown man for fucks sake, and had been doing this for a large portion of his life. Most of the time he was able to keep himself grounded during concerts, and he knew he was always allowed to rely on Patrick to pull him back down to earth if he floated too far to do it on his own. Unfortunately, this was not one of those days.
He had already tried his usual method of leaning his head on Patrick's shoulder, but the contact quickly grew overwhelming, especially mixed with the loud music and screams of excited fans in the crowd. Pete quickly jerked his head away like he’d been shocked, and tried to force his lungs to start working properly again.
He could already tell he was faltering. He was missing chords and falling behind. Everyone probably fucking hated him, he cant even play properly.Why even start a band if you can't play?
