This motley collection, less hidebound than a hide sack (with bits sticking out), was carried up only by a messenger imp who thought it looked like secrets. Perhaps it was. For how much, if any, did they expect to survive? Certainly, it presents no great myth, though mythic figures are present. No star-ordained ritual lies within these pages, though references are made to their ending. There is no reason why this should be what remains of the Fall of the Commonwealth.

“Really?” He looked up from the pot he was stirring, brows high. “Bring it here. The Scribes must be benevolent, if they’re, well. If, after what happened, they’re still…”
“What happened tonight was not our doing,” said Synne. He scooted over on the ground, again and again until he was seated next to Hedwyn. The starlight, somehow, always seemed to illuminate the ink scrawled throughout the pages of the book, but the glow of the fire was even stronger. They looked practically golden, under the fire’s glow. “I do not think the Scribes would have allowed the Rite to continue on, if they did not approve of us. And I think, if they did not approve, that I would not have been able to find the way to the next Rite. The new page being illuminated, that is not so relieving.”
“So says the expert,” Hedwyn mused. “Read it to me, then? Illuminate me.”
