Nobody expected it when it first came for the Animal Army. There hadn’t been a wave of the Sick even skimming the area for a year. Everyone thought it was over, that tossing bodies out by the river and crossing out lost names off the wall was a thing of the past. That twitching pinkies, violent fevers and agonizing seizures were over.
But everyone was wrong. It came for them, just like it did for everyone else after the Great Crumble.

"Before the beginning, there was a disease. Its name? H5G9. But everyone calls it the Sick. For this story though, we have to start closer to the end.
No one knows what came first, the Hybrids or the Sick, but one thing was clear: life would never be the same again. When Hybrids were first born, they were considered blessings from the angel Raziel. The families that had Hybrids were regarded very highly. Soon though, the Shadowhunters, the ones born human, began to think that Hybrids weren't what they had originally thought, so they massacred them. Flare-ups of the H5G9 virus started not long after.
This, along with the founding of the Circle, is what caused the breaking of the Shadowhunter world."
