Jacobi’s brown skin is flushed, with tears rolling steadily down his cheeks and dripping off his chin and nose. Another small rivulet flows down his nose, beading on those full lips. Jacobi doesn’t react, or even seem aware that he’s crying. He just stares into the distance. He’d been so quiet, Kepler hadn’t even noticed until he looked over.

There is an odd enticement to be traced, one reminiscent of the whirring sound of an incoming missile and it makes Jacobi nervous. Nervous in the way he felt when Kepler first asked him to strip naked, nervous like he’d felt when Cutter had observed him with cold and precise eyes for the final verdict of his physical capabilities, nervous at how Hilbert appraise him right this second.
“If you tell anyone I will blow your head from your shoulders,” Jacobi threatens quietly through gritted teeth – and Hilbert laughs.
