    Her grip on his wrist tightened and her gaze was piercing. What was that in her eyes? Pity? Disgust? Shame?

    He was about to wrench his wrist from her grasp, tell her he didn't want her pity, that he had to do this. But he felt her hands wrap around his torso, felt her warm body pressed up against his chest. He looked down, stunned. She had wrapped him in a tight embrace. He felt his body loosen, felt his grip on the door handle release as he rested his chin on her head and wrapped his arms around her.

    She whispered into his chest words of assurance and after a slight pause in her speech, she whispered the words that broke his heart.

    "I hope I die quickly in that arena because I don't think I have enough courage to do what you do."

      "I'm guessing you have some training then?"

      She nodded, still staring at herself in the mirror.

      But her face broke out in a small grin when she began to tell him what she could do. Her lip curled up and her cheeks began to blush as she rambled.

      "My aim with throwing-knives is really good. I know which plants are edible and what to stay away from. I can make nets and baskets and I'm really good at setting traps. I can use a spear but I'm not super good at throwing them. I'm an excellent swimmer."

      She smirked and turned to face him in the eye for the first time before adding quietly, "I bet I could beat you in a race."

      Finnick's mouth was wide open, a smile on his lips as he felt his heart soar. He could do this. He could work with both of them, especially her.

      Before he could say anything she said quietly, "Gideon thinks he can throw knives but I've seen him try to kill a fish at the pier. His aim is as good as a five-year-old."

      Finnick let out a huge laugh and for the first time in a while, let himself truly be happy with his newest friend. Friend.

I can’t stop thinking of poor little Elise Ackerman from last year and the stunned silence from the entire District when her name was called. Even though she only had two slips in thousands, those tiny pieces of paper were enough to kill her all the same.

     

    All things considered, Gustavo Fernandez's life isn't too bad. He has a warm bed. He eats (mostly) consistent meals. He frequently wins wrestling competitions at his school, when he's not working in the stockyards that is. He spends time with his bookish lover. The one thing he can't stand is summertime. District Ten is an arid and dry climate, so summers are brutal. He doesn't think anything can be worse than summer until he's confronted with the worse nightmare of any child in Panem, the Hunger Games.

      "And second, it wasn't just about me," Katniss continues, and I look up at her in surprise. I'd known Peeta cared about me, of course, and I'm pretty sure it wasn't just about Katniss. But the willingness to literally kill himself for me? That's different.

      "What do you mean?" I ask, because she sounds so sure, and unless I was reading him entirely wrong and he'd also told Katniss at some point that he didn't care about her or something, she has no way of knowing that.

      Katniss sighs again, staring off into the distance. "On the second day of the Games," she starts, "when you were stuck in that tree and they sent Rue up to get you, there was a time where Peeta and Thresh were alone together, just waiting for the chance to distract the Careers. And they used that time to make a deal with each other. If it got to the end, and it came down to the Victor being one of them or either you or Rue, they would die so that one of you could live." Katniss lets out a breath, softly, as I try to process those words. To understand what she's telling me. "That was the real rebellion. Not Peeta eating those berries, that wasn't the beginning. The real rebellion was when two boys from different districts made a deal to try to save two little girls they barely knew, no matter what, even at the cost of their own lives. That was the defiance that started everything. Peeta just carried through with it, told the districts that they could rebel and succeed." I stare at her, unable to process this. To understand the enormity of what Thresh and Peeta did. Not just in the scope of the rebellion, but that they cared enough to do it at all. “I can’t love him," Katniss continues softly. ‘"I didn’t know him. But for what he did… for how he gave his word and went through with it… I can respect him, for that.”

      That on its own is huge. Katniss doesn't respect many people, even those she does care about. It takes a lot, to win that from her. It means something, that Peeta, a boy that, as she said, she didn't know, could.

      Maybe that's what gets it to sink in, exactly how big this is. I doubt Peeta and Thresh meant to start all this, with those words. But when they followed through, when I survived, a little girl that never should have been the last one standing in the Games, that changed something. And maybe I did do something, fighting to the end, to allow them to follow through. Maybe I did something when I fell in love with a girl who I never should have met, who was sent to die beside me. Maybe I did something when I agreed to an alliance that became a sort of strange, rushed family of strangers who still cared about each other enough to die for each other.
