I feel like the terrifying implications of Wammy's House and L having a successor despite his young age are talked about way too little. So I wrote a fanfic about it.

"The thing about getting rid of useless pride is that it is a scaffolding built of years. It takes more than the work of a moment; though you are begging in the windowless cell. What was I thinking, putting myself in here? You don’t remember. It’s beginning to disturb you, how much you don’t remember; although when you close your eyes and follow the trail—one event follows upon the other just as you had expected it to; and you can even recall the first time Kira killed, when all you saw was a reporter’s face through the screen of your TV. It was the end of your boredom, because though you were nothing but a spectator to the great battle, you already felt how Kira and L would pull you along in their wake just as any battle between titans would (because you would stand within the event horizon, if only to get closer).
Perhaps that is where you are now. In the quiet dark within the black hole, where your self, gaunt and unfamiliar to you, has already irrevocably been altered. (Suspect. Name: Yagami Light.)"

Summary
Wammy's was a horrible place to grow up, and one late night while L and Light are working on the Kira case, it comes up. Turns out it's a very sensitive topic, even if L is trying to pretend its not, and Light wants to know why. He's never been able to resist his curioustiy, has he?
"Ryuzaki … I - do you even have a name, or is it actually L, because you’ve been curated into the world's greatest detective since you were five?”
Ryuzaki chews on the inside of his cheek with a tight jaw, staring at Light, his eye twitches,. “I do understand how it looks, Light,” he says Light’s name very pointedly, without raising his voice. Light knows he’s in trouble. He pushed too hard, Ryuzaki is right; he’s tired and isn’t able to have this serious conversation in his current sleep deprived state of mind. But it’s too late, he’s realised his mistake once he’s already pushed the boulder over the lip of a cliff.
In which Light is too tired to be tactful, L cries and swears (Whao, two in one) because he doesn't know how to do feelings

Standard Yotsuba-Arc fic with a little bit of humor, a little bit of political philosophy, and a lot a bit of yearning. Light Yagami is the prime suspect in the Kira investigation, and while a lesser man might deteriorate under the bone-splintering weight of a near-constant surveillance, Light is anything but a lesser man.

If he didn't try to hide it, Light wouldn't find it so troubling. Probably it hardly even hurts. But he hasn't ever known Ryuzaki to act as though anything he does is something to be hidden, ashamed of. It itches at his mind. Why does he do this?
