“No,” Eddie says softly, thinking of the similar words Steve had told him before he left. I tried to love you and let it be enough but how do you love a forest fire without letting it burn you alive? If love had been enough to save him, Steve would have been his guardian angel, his knight in shining armor. He’s still the best thing that will ever, ever happen to Eddie but just like everyone else he wasn’t enough because Eddie was already too much in the first place.

“Holy shit,” Steve gasped as they looked out from the summit. The water below was a glassy pale blue and rippled across the deep cavernous walls. The setting sun bled through a break in the clouds, casting a gradient of radiant pinks and oranges on the snow dusted silhouette of the town, “It’s beautiful,” he whispered under his breath.
“Yeah,” Eddie agreed but he wasn’t looking at the landscape. He looked at Steve. A beautiful bloom of deep pink flamed the tips of his ears and spread along the apples of his cheeks and across the bridge of his nose. The sunlight caught in his deep chestnut locks, making it look like it had been spun out of delicate gold and his deep hazel eyes danced with the falling snow.
The holidays were always a difficult time of year, bittersweet in many ways for both Steve and Eddie but maybe in the quiet winter of 1986, this year might be different.
