“My guess is that you were expecting a guy, but-” she laughs, and Janis feels her heart stop at the sound for a millisecond- “Alan is our cutest guy, Aaron needed to take off to spend time with his girlfriend, and Jason is kind of a jerk. We all think so, including Jason.” She blushes red, still holding the food in her hand. “We thought about sending Christian, but he isn’t exactly the most sociable guy. So, we ended up on me. Sorry if you’re kind of let down.”
She holds out the bag of food, the receipt on top of it with her order request typed neatly under a line. Janis flushes red, reading over what Damian made her write after their third glass of wine.
Plz send the cutest person u have in ur restaurant for the delivery.
“I’m not,” Janis says.
“You’re not… Janis?” The girl frowns, adjusting her beanie nervously.
“Let down,” Janis corrects herself quickly. “I’m not let down.”
(Or, the one where Damian makes Janis write something he thought would be funny in the other requests box on her delivery order, and she ends up getting a lot more than just a burger and fries by the end of it.)

Janis is genuinely fed up because this was a stupid idea and she could be doing so many better things on a Saturday afternoon. She’s about to get up and go, but the bell rings and the oily-haired man wearing a MAGA cap is replaced by the first woman on her speed date roster.
And not just any woman, but the blonde-haired, blue-eyed muse of her nightmares.
Her jaw drops and she can kind of feel her brain short-circuiting when their eyes meet. Regina looks equally shocked, mouth hung open and shoulders tense. “Janis?”

“We both got dresses,” Greta said cautiously, looking toward Carson.
The rest of the table joined in looking toward Carson.
“Yeah, I found one this morning,” Carson said, avoiding everyone’s looks.
“You don’t sound too happy about that,” Esther said.
“I just…I don’t feel comfortable in it. I don’t know how to explain it,” Carson said with exasperation.
“Have you thought about wearing a suit?” Max asked.
Carson knew that her identity was more than her clothes, but she couldn’t wrap her head around how her outside felt so different from her inside. So, she stuck with what she knew, wore what was mostly comfortable, and put all of the love she should have saved for herself into Greta.

Summary
In a worn envelope in her purse are the mementos she has from the season – address cards for each of the Peaches, phone numbers scribbled on napkins, the game card Greta kissed, a handful of photos, newspaper clippings, a ticket stub. She looks at them at night sometimes, spreads them all out on her beige bedspread and conjures the season back in muted color and vivid feeling. Sometimes, she thinks about what it felt like to win a game and know the world belonged to them, if only for a moment. Sometimes, she thinks about what it was like to hold Greta’s hand, before the world fell apart.
It’s two weeks before Carson realizes she’s been living half-awake this whole time. If you were going to moon this much, you should have just followed her to New York. Yes, Carson should have followed Greta to New York. But she didn’t. She stayed, instead.

Summary
There’s something that happens in those very first moments with a woman, especially one who’s never ever before, when they realize. Greta sees it in Carson’s face, the way her eyes widen and search Greta’s for recognition, an oh, this is it. This is what’s supposed to happen. She feels Carson’s whole body tighten, sees her take the deepest of breaths before diving back in. To Greta – experienced Greta, Greta who thinks of love like a poison, a threat – she is understanding only half of what Carson says with her hands and hips and mouth: this feels good, I want more of this.
The other half, which will take Greta a season of baseball and a personal revelation to understand, is unspoken between them: Carson says this is what love could taste like and Carson says I’ve wanted it for so long.
