His eyes kept fluttering close, almost as if he was trying to imagine something that wasn’t there and hadn’t been there in a long time—something that would never be there again no matter how many pennies he wished on and fingers he crossed.
He felt her all time. Every moment, everywhere. It was like when he lost her the first time, except something felt sickeningly more concrete this time around. He saw her in girls that snorted when they laughed. He saw her in girls who were growing their hair out, which El was so excited to do. He saw her in tattoos and waffles and Miami Vice and purple eyeshadow and pop music.
Or
El vanishes when the bridge collapses, and Mike’s friends force him to go to senior prom and he gets drunk and lets out all his emotions about El.

“You look like a..” El bites her lip, pushing him off softly. “A puppy.”
“A puppy?” Mike says, aghast. “Me? Huh.”
“Yes.” She smiles. “A very cute, very handsome puppy.”
To be honest, Mike’s heart almost explodes, and he struggles to keep blood from rushing to his face. He doesn’t really know how to react to that, considering no one has ever called him handsome before (or maybe just his mother).

For as long as Shauna could, that’s exactly what she considered Melissa as: a distraction. However, as much as Shauna wished it wasn’t true, she did feel something for Melissa. Something she couldn’t, or didn’t want to, for the time being, put into words, written or spoken.
That blond girl with her faded backwards pink hat and her sheepish personality had made her way into Shauna’s life unexpectedly. It was truly a stark contrast to the monotony of her life in the wilderness, between butchering animals and reading the same five books over and over again, having an anxious JV girl following her around and yapping about everything felt refreshing.

Hopper took a moment to remind himself to remain calm. “Because, she’s my daughter. And I will warn you Wheeler, if you even dare to mutter the words ‘she’s not actually your daughter’ to me, I’m going to pull this car over and-“
“I know she’s your daughter.” Mike frowned. “That’s my point.”
OR: Mike doesn't understand why Hopper cares so much about El's dating life, since his own parents never cared about his or Nancy's.
OR OR: Hopper realizes this kid needs more than just threats screamed at him, and teaches him (kindly and gently this time) about respect.
