"You're the first, okay?" Nigel tells Alex, like this is supposed to mean something to him. "The first."
It does, Alex realizes. Nigel was untrusting of others, quiet and shadow-like for a reason. He knew he didn't fit in with the other kids and it wasn't intended to be because of quirky reasons.
Nigel Colbie was unsettling, he was a loner because he preferred it and it was safer that way. He did not know how to handle the idea of companionship. He found interest and fascination in what others found disgusting and off-putting. He did not entertain the idea of playing docile, caretaker wife and kindhearted, nurturing mother. He was not capable of love. He was obsessive and observant of what he was interested in and his sights were locked onto Alex, because Alex threw himself in the cross-hair and now he cannot escape the scope.

Or, the Forbie relationship is forced because their fathers meddle too much and still believe in arranged marriages and believe that their sons would be good for each other (match each other's freak too well) and there's nothing that either of them can do except get to know each other, while still playing their fucked up mind games. *swoon*

Really, Alex had more of a life left than Nigel. He could go home, fabricate some story, condemn Nigel with his own delusions and get off scot-free. Of course he could – he was in the position to, wasn’t he, smart and white and with a future, free of bias from the system. But this control over Nigel – he didn’t want to relinquish that. And Nigel had nowhere to go.
And, although he would never say it out loud, the rush of the gun under his chin and Nigel at his feet was something that he would quite like to replicate. The risk. The reward.♠︎
The gun misfires. Alex realises he can hold himself hostage to keep Nigel alive. They flee to London and begin to dance around faux-normality, but it won't last long.
