Summary
It's been twelve years since everything fell apart, and John Silver is settled in New England. He has a nice house and a job he likes, and he's gotten used to the loneliness. It's a good life, he thinks, but of course that's cast into doubt when James Flint and Thomas Hamilton show up to find closure and, apparently, to see whether he's happy.

“I can’t believe you’re leaving,” he says. “It’s dangerous, Caleb. You know you might not come back.”
He looks earnest and frightened and he’s tilting a little on unsteady feet like he’s about to crash forward and shatter the distance between them.
“You left first."
There is more than one kind of courage.

“Will you tell me all your adventures?” Ben asks, pulling him down into a pew.
“Here? For confession?”
Ben blushes. “No, of course not. I don’t know. Anywhere. I can’t believe you’re here. You really came back.”
“Did you think I’d drown?”
“No! No, of course not. Only I thought, maybe, after seeing all of the world, maybe you’d decide there wasn’t much to come back to.”
Caleb dares to grab his wrist. “I’m not going to leave you, Ben.” It’s heavy with history and intent, and he can’t look him in the eye after saying it.

Caleb sent word ahead that he would be making port here soon, but he didn’t expect Ben to show up to welcome him. “Well-read woman, eh Caleb?” Ryder elbows him in the side. “That’s all well and good, Brewster, but if it were up to me I’d focus on harpooning that little target.”
a.k.a Ben is the well-read woman in New Haven and Caleb may not know Greek, Latin or Hebrew, but he does have good words too, you know?

“What would you suggest we do instead, then?”
Maybe it was the way he said it, the way Flint was sitting with his knees sprawled out, or the secrets he guarded so closely; Silver didn’t know what it was, but somebody’s Devil took ahold of his tongue then and he said, “I think we should fuck.”

They return to Nassau after their defeat of the British Navy, only to be met by Agitator Billy and his propaganda machine. This is why Captain Flint tries not to let other people decide things.
In which: Flint wears a disguise, Silver tells a terrible story, one bathes the other, and only one man died the whole night which is, like, definitely a record for them.

Summary
It’s been...Gods, it’s been more than a year since their paths last crossed. Since Geralt emphatically un-crossed them, one could say, outside another cave high up on a windy mountain top.
And here they are, trapped like a couple of treed cats in this little hole in a cliff face. No horse, no pack, no potions, no swords. Just a rapidly dwindling handful of dried meat, a useless hunting knife, a festering bite in his side that hurts much more than it should...and Jaskier, the surest omen that everything in his life is about completely stop making sense. Again.
In which back-to-back encounters with a siren, a wyvern, and an old, old friend leave Geralt in need of a rescue. Just not the one he thought he needed.

Jaskier drops back onto his heels, still mostly sitting on Geralt’s legs, and punches the air in triumph. “ Yes! It worked! Fuck you, I finally saved your miserable ass from something magical and stupid, that makes us even--”
Geralt raises himself up on one elbow. There’s an ache through his whole body he hadn’t felt before, but that’s rather unimportant at the moment. “I think,” he says, very softly, staring at Jaskier, “that it makes us rather more than that.”
“--did you see that, right in the throat, I punched you in the throat, I - what?” Jaskier breaks off, blinking...and follows Geralt’s gaze to the hunting knife buried to the hilt in his shoulder. “Fffffucking-- ow!”

Summary
Billy was sifting through the debris one morning, considering just caving and bringing the cups down, ending whatever Mexican standoff Goody was having with the landlady, when he came upon an envelope with photographs. They were very different from the childhood pictures, printed on stiff cardstock. The images were darker and somewhat grainy, and while Goody was young in the pictures he was certainly not a child, no, he was a young man and he was devastatingly handsome.
Wherein Billy comes upon the photographic evidence of Goodnight's youthful indiscretions.

The next photo was blurry; clearly Goody had moved during the process and the smile and almost bashful gesture of his head were painted in smeared lines on the photograph, giving it a soft impression. This Goody was more approachable, more like the boyish and twitchy person Billy knew, than the handsome, self-possessed creature in the previous picture, excruciatingly aware of his own beauty.

Summary
The chatter around the table continued but Billy wasn’t paying attention to it, instead focused on the way Goody’s shoulders slowly relaxed and his hand went back to tracing patterns on Billy's back, the lines in his face smoothing out again. Billy gave Goody a private little smile as Goody held the cigarette to Billy’s lips, holding it steady as Billy took a long drag, lips almost pressed to his fingers, leaning into each other’s space.

Bookmarker's Notes
The trouble was, words were not Billy’s strong point. That was something Billy had always known about himself. He came from a land with more than a thousand years of literary tradition, a land of poetry and song, but that had never been his gift. He was no more talkative in Korean than he was in English, and he felt that actions spoke more clearly and honestly. He had no idea how to say with words the things that he needed to say.

At Sharpsburg he watches three hundred and fifty of them die, helpless with the Union ordnance beyond the reach of his rifle. There's no more camaraderie and fond teasing after that. No-one calling him their guardian angel. But thirty-seven confirmed kills earns him The Angel of Death instead, and whatever scrap of poetry in his soul might once have seen the irony in that is utterly, deathly silent.

The name on the cross read “ William Rocks ”.
It was the oddest feeling, standing there. Like it wasn’t just a man buried beneath his feet. Everything he’d known up until now, that was buried under there too. His home, his family, his life, all of it. Gone the moment he’d killed that bastard, now buried with him under six feet of cold earth.

Summary
Goodnight liked to say that they met in a bar fight, that he watched Billy take down a gang or sometimes even the whole bar with a single knife or just his hairpin or naught but his two hands. The story changed a little each time he told it. It was never how it actually happened, but it was how Goodnight liked to tell it, so Billy never amended it.
He knew why Goodnight didn’t like to tell it how it had been. They both did. But if Goodnight needed to pretend something else, if that helped him to cope, then Billy sure as hell wasn’t going to remind him of something different.
There had been a bar fight, at least.

Bookmarker's Notes
Goodnight always told a different story of how they met, embellished it differently every time and Billy was always more heroic in each.
But Billy preferred the one where a stranger stood between him and nine guns.

Cougar is sitting cross-legged on the bed next to him, one of his rifles disassembled on a drop sheet in front of him, his hands moving deftly as he inspects and cleans each part. And everything’s copacetic, and he’s getting a low buzz of calm, calm off Cougar when he has the sudden urge to roll over and stick his face into that vulnerable curve between Cougar’s shoulder and neck and just breathe.
Shit. He can’t even blame that one entirely on Cat. That one was mostly him. And it’s been happening more often lately.

“How are you?” Finn says.
Poe shrugs. Right now, he feels pretty good—loose-limbed and a little overheated, but not in a bad way. In general, though, he feels untethered, off balance, like he’s not-so-slowly coming undone; like he’s spiraling downward in a freefall and he’s both terrified of hitting the ground and, in some strange and detached way, curious as to what’ll happen when he does.
