    Summary

A companion piece to The Freedom of Falling, taking place from Will's perspective before he and Mike meet. This story could potentially be read as a stand-alone or an introduction to The Freedom of Falling, but there will be references to the original story throughout.

Heavy themes of abuse and abuse recovery. Read at your own discretion.

It was almost too much to accept and at first, he hadn’t wanted to. It was too much kindness, too much trust, and too much money wasted on him from Steve’s personal savings. He’d tried to decline it, but Steve refused to take the key back and Robin told him to shut up in the most gentle way she knew how to. After all, what were they going to do with the space? They couldn’t use it for storage forever and they both insisted the renovation was better off as an apartment for Will than it was just collecting dust.

    Summary

Mike is a paladin, sworn to uphold his sacred oaths, protect the helpless, and bring the vile, evil things of the world to justice. On his first solo mission, he's tasked with delivering a necromancer to the hangman's noose, but the man he's been charged with escorting to his death doesn't seem like a villain, or even a threat. Still, Mike has a duty to fulfill. Tags to be added as needed, rating may change.

From where he sat, the bound man looked at his feet, caked in blood and dirt, torn to pieces from the road. Mike glanced away, knowing full well he could cure the wounds if he wanted. Now that really would be a waste of resources. The man was to die anyway and the walk was meant to be penance for his crimes: a small measure of suffering to pay for what he’d done. His blood would nourish the earth, the soil beneath, and something new would grow from it when all the necromancer had brought was rot and disease.

Part one and two of this series will be updated and posted near each other but this one is about three to four chapters behind part one. Ratings and tags will change as needed. Please read tags and be aware of content before reading as there will be very graphic and disturbing content.

8908 had an itch on the sole of his foot but tried to ignore it. Even if his ankle hadn’t been cuffed, he couldn’t have turned far enough in his kneeling position to scratch it with his hands bound so closely together. He shifted, letting his weight move from one leg to the other, feeling the pins and needles of blood flow as he did. Great. Now his nose itched too.

“Eyes forward,” an employee reminded him as they passed, followed by a Domestic in a violet dress.

8908 glanced up briefly before setting his gaze on a water spot on the far wall. Were they going to make him sit through a Choosing or would he be removed before the client arrived? Surely they wouldn’t let such an eyesore remain on the showroom floor.

Why had Noble Synergy hired him? Why had he accepted the offer? The neat six figure salary had certainly played a role in his decision. Were his morals so easily bought? Apparently. Will sighed, fiddling with his suit jacket in agitation. Joyce noticed his nervous fidgeting and discomfort (she always did) and tried to help.

“Just pick a nice assistant. They can help you get settled and get ahead at work and once the lease is up, things will be fine. Go back to normal.”

“Unless you extend the contract. Hell, even buy.” Hopper pointed out, eyes still trained on his phone.

Joyce shot her husband a withering look as Will stared at him, aghast. Hopper glanced up, noticing the tension.

“What? I’m just saying the kid’s gonna be making the money. He could afford to keep one on,” he grumbled, quickly turning his eyes back to the screen of his phone. “I mean, did you see the contract they offered? And that apartment they provided? Not saying he’s gotta keep it, only that he could...”

    Summary

Arranged Marriage AU. Tags and warnings will be added as necessary.

Armitage finds himself in a marriage he doesn't want to a man that he hates. At least it will be beneficial for his military career, so long as he can survive his spouse's unpredictable temperament and his own, sometimes deadly ambitions.

    **

    “Smile, General. Everyone is watching.”

Armitage shot him a vitriolic glance before returning to look straight ahead. He would conduct himself with grace and dignity, but he refused to smile while his freedoms were stripped from him. Ren might be able to conceal himself beneath a mask, but Armitage had no such options presented to him. The best he could manage was neutrality instead of outright hostility, and Ren was lucky to have that. Though even neutrality was difficult when he had to present his hand for the binding. It was so distasteful to stand there with his hand on top of Ren’s while the officiant wrapped them together to symbolize their lifelong bond that Armitage felt the bile rise in his throat uncontrollably. At least they both wore gloves and didn’t actually have to touch one another. At least the ceremony didn’t end with a kiss.

    Summary

Hux and Ren are stranded and must rely on each other. Kylo finds that Hux may need to rely on him for more than the general cares to admit.

    **

Hux pressed away from him, clawed at his jumpsuit and hissed. It was to be expected. What he hadn’t expected was the way that while he fought, Hux pressed his face against Kylo’s neck. Kriffing hell, Hux's nose was pressed so close to Kylo’s ear that his lips actually touched skin when he spoke.

“Let me down, you misbegotten oaf,” he whined. “Now.”

His words weren’t unclear, but his body and his thoughts were sending mixed signals. Even as he whispered the order, the hands that had been pushing and clawing at Kylo had begun dragging over his skin as if to hold him near. Despite his words, in his mind, Hux was desperate for the touch. Kylo’s skin felt like a soothing balm against a wound, cool as spring water and just as satiating. Kylo pulled his head back, away from Hux’s searching lips. When he felt a hand lace around his neck to draw him back down, Kylo almost granted the general’s wish and dropped him onto the floor.

    Summary

Armitage Hux has had enough of Kylo Ren getting away without consequences for his actions. He takes it upon himself to pay the Force User a visit and set him straight only to have the encounter take an unexpected turn. Still, there are worse things in the world than having someone nearby who he can bed when the need arises, and if Ren can be trusted to follow the rules, why shouldn't it be him?
    **
“Listen to me, Ren. If I agree to this, there are rules. There is no guarantee that this will ever happen again. You’re not entitled to my body or my time after this, understand? You have no claim on me, no privilege to call on me whenever it suits you. You will not allow this to affect your behavior on this ship, nor in front of the crew. As far as anyone else is concerned, this will have never happened. You’ll not try anything funny, nor will you use your parlor tricks to make me more agreeable to acts which I find uncongenial. I’ll make no allowances for that, am I clear?”

“Yes,” Ren sighed, trying to press forward again only to be halted by one of Armitage’s hands in his mane of hair, gripping it and holding him firm.

“Look at me and tell me you understand my conditions, Ren.”

    Summary

Mike is called to retrieve Will who's too drunk to get himself home safely.

    **

Mike never saw him dance, especially not in public. The last time Mike had gotten to witness anything even remotely similar had been their junior prom, and it was only because the Electric Slide had started playing and skipping out on it when the whole gymnasium participated would have made him stand out more than just joining in. So Will, usually reserved and quiet, found himself awkwardly shuffling back and forth, clapping his hands and popping his knees while Mike tried to give him an impromptu lesson with varying degrees of success. The Party had skipped their senior prom to go drinking at the quarry even though they all still dressed up and posed for pictures so their parents never knew about it. Seeing Will dance now would have been almost endearing to watch if he hadn’t been so clearly inebriated.

    Summary

This fic takes place over the course of a few years. It focuses on Mike, his struggles with his feelings, and his sexuality.

Both were quiet for a long time and Mike began to wonder if Will had dozed off, fallen asleep in the warm summer sun. Mike didn’t want to wake him so he just watched the trees sway overhead, trying to quiet his thoughts. He blinked when he felt Will roll over and brush against him as the smaller teen adjusted himself. He was warm, so much warmer than The Mindflayer had been in Mike’s dream. Warm and safe and well, nothing lurking beneath the surface. The Flayer was dead and Will was fine.

Mike wanted to touch him, to gain further confirmation, but he didn’t. Boys didn’t do that, touch each other for comfort or affection unless it was a quick hug or a slap on the back, even if they cared about each other.

    Summary

As requested by the prompt 'A really angsty one sided Byler story'. This will be a lot of hurt with absolutely no comfort involved.

    **

The first time he noticed Mike and El holding hands, there was a strain, a little tug in the pit of his belly that ached so much he actually touched it: like that would help anything. The first time he saw them kiss, the pain in his stomach moved to his chest and he had to excuse himself just so he could get some fresh air and calm down.

He’d pressed a hand to his chest and tried to justify the pain as heartburn or some other physical ailment. The thought that his chest hurt so bad he could have cried was too uncomfortable to even consider that it might have been brought on by emotions alone. Nothing going on in his head could possibly hurt so bad that it would have a physical reaction, right?

    Summary

    My contribution to MerMay.

Will was just trying to keep his head low and his bills paid. The job at the Research Center for Ocean Life was easy, quiet, and it kept food in his belly. Everything was going well until he saw something in the Deep Sea enclosures he couldn't explain.

    **

His sneakers slid across the soap, making him windmill his arms and for a moment, the safety training video he’d watched a few weeks prior played on a loop in his head, scolding him for not wearing no-slip shoes.

“No. Nope. No fucking way,” he panted through chattering teeth as he found his footing and leaned his back against the door.

He kept his eyes locked on the enclosure, waiting for the light to show up again or for his mind to come up with a better explanation than there was a fucking alien in a tank less than a hundred feet away from him. He waited almost half an hour before he found his nerve and crept back to retrieve the mop. He didn’t bother to clean the glass, justifying it with the lack of time he had left in his shift rather than the queasy feeling in his stomach and uncomfortable, primal fear of being confronted with something he had no logical explanation for.

    Summary

    Fantasy AU.

    **

According to Joyce, with the witch’s death, the land turned bad. Fields of rich, black soil turned to sand and crumbled away until even the most experienced farmers struggled to make anything take root. The woods, once filled with game and birds, were eerily silent. It was as if all life fled when the witch drew their final breath. All of this ‘used to be’ was second hand knowledge to Will; he’d never seen it any other way.

He didn’t mind the quiet or the difficult land. He’d never cared for chatter and concocting new methods to enrich his fields was a challenge, nothing more. Will tended his crops, mixed things like horse dung, egg shells, and rotting vegetation into the earth to help it thrive. He liked to whisper to his seedlings when no one could see and would happily traverse back and forth on Damora’s back as many times as was needed to bring water to them when the sky refused to offer any. Every time Will set a seed to ground, he offered a prayer. Sometimes it felt like the earth heard him, that he could actually hear it answer.

Modern Day AU: no cannon from the show will make an appearance in this story.

Mike spends his free time working at Dustin's coffee shop, Level Up Latte. A visit to the tattoo parlor across the street, Stranger Inks, sets his life in an unexpected trajectory.

This story will deal with mature themes including self mutilation, sexual identities, assault, and other mature situations. The tags and rating will change as content is uploaded. Please read tags and proceed at your own discretion.

    **

Will bent over, adjusting his lamp so it illuminated the tattooed portion of skin. He looked at it for a moment before taking Mike gently by the wrist, startling him, and drew Mike’s arm closer to his face. Mike sat still, watching the other man examine the tattoo. He resisted the urge to jerk away when Will ran a finger lightly over the ink and clicked his tongue. Will moved his fingers from the tattoo to bare skin, pressing down on it, almost testing it. What was he looking for? Mike’s fingers twitched at the contact and he focused on watching the other man’s face.

Soulmate AU. Will Byers has been waiting his whole life to find his soul's missing piece. When he does, it doesn't go exactly the way he'd always dreamed.

    **

Will watched the other man from the corner of his eye as the professor began speaking. Mike typed steadily, only pausing to chew on his highlighter or raise his hand to answer questions, drawing attention to Will’s little corner and making Will shrink a little at the eyes turned to his general vicinity. Every time Mike spoke, his adams apple bobbed, the tenor of his voice echoed through Will’s ears like a drum and Will shivered at the sound.

Will could barely hear the professor speaking, he was too distracted by Mike’s close proximity. Jesus Christ, how was he supposed to concentrate when all he wanted to do was touch Mike, grab him and shake him and ask why the other man didn’t recognize Will? Why hadn’t he rejoiced at finding his perfect other half? Why didn’t he even look at Will like something life changing and remarkable had happened to them? Will’s face felt hot and he wanted to scream.

AU, slow burn, fluff, angst. Enjoy.

The nofin was still struggling, fighting the vicious waves to breathe and call out in it’s ugly, guttural tongue. Will couldn’t speak it, but he’d observed enough nofins for long enough periods to know this one was calling for help. Will broke the surface, using the waves to conceal himself and looked around. The ship was still moving, getting further away from the member who’d fallen overboard. Didn’t they realize this one was missing from their pod? Hadn’t they seen it fall?

    Summary

Will has a good life in Richmond; friends, a job, college, and his painting. He'd almost forgotten Hawkins, the painful memories and the ghosts of the past, until one very real one shows up at his door.

This story can be read as a stand alone or as part of the over all series.

    ***
Will picked at the hot wings, mostly listening. He tried to refuse when Mike ordered them double shots of Wild Turkey (but Mike was buying, besides, Will didn’t have to drive) and one double turned into two, just the way the beer that followed seemed to somehow change from a sixteen ounce to a twenty. Will finally felt himself relax into the buzz, feeling light and heavy all at the same time.

When their knees bumped under the table, Will felt a fire bloom in his belly. God, he’d missed this. Once the food was gone and the drinks turned to water, Mike settled back, stretching like an oversized cat.

“Hey, that coffee offer still on the table?”

Will has a reputation and lingering issues from the Mind Flayer. Mike offers him a ride home.

    ***
Mike had to know about Will’s reputation, the way he’d reacted to Will coming out of the car earlier had confirmed that. He’d just always been too polite to bring it up. Maybe finding out first hand that it was true had, Will didn’t know, piqued Mike’s interest?

Will glanced over at Mike who was watching the road. He’d said his parents and Holly were out of town and Will knew Nancy was away at college. Was this an invitation?
