It’s the start of June, and summer is nearly here, and in Faramir’s front yard the hydrangeas are starting to bloom, white flowers the size of his hand. Faramir isn’t at home, though; he’s in the waiting room of the psych ward at Minas Tirith hospital, scuffing his Converse against the tile, listening to some politician on the news promise to protect local jobs from the immigrants coming in to steal them.

When she finally wakes Faramir, he clings to her with abandon, hiding his face against her shoulder, and she clings back just as tightly and thinks about how she will never go home to the Mark. She sings the first thing that comes to mind, to do anything to stop Faramir shaking so badly, and what she sings is Waldere, an old ballad that she still remembers perfectly word-for-word, used to calm small children when the wind picks up outside on the plains and howls like a dying man—
(She cries too, a little bit, and they stay like that til morning.)

Summary
This was not a story about love or about death, not in the end, not the part that mattered. It was a story about choosing the life you wanted to live and hanging onto that, against all perils, all harms. Arwen wrapped her hands around Aragorn’s, the sword calluses on one, the ink stains on the other, her Ranger, her soldier, her king and her friend. She held on tight, kissed his brow, and thought about the rebuilding of the north wall.
Arwen and Luthien both had been asked to choose between peace and creation; eternal light, or lighting the flame themselves. They were Prometheus, the titan descended to earth. Every death they pulled out of Arwen was worth it for the things she got to build.
