“I should probably go home,” Adora rasps.
Catra groans as she withdraws, nosing her ear. She breathes onto Adora's neck for an extra beat.
"You okay?"
Adora nods, unable to articulate her internal conflict.
Another slow inhale, then Catra asks, “Can I put my number in your phone?”
(Catra and Adora emancipated themselves from the foster system to escape Shadow Weaver. Their relationship had been teetering on the edge between all-consuming enmeshment and protective devotion when a betrayal severed them for good. The story opens with them meeting in Salineas, having no memory of their shared history. Compelled to understand the extent of their relationship, they seek out an experimental procedure to remember --and perhaps change-- the patterns that had led to their end. )

Summary
They stay that way for a long time, Catra’s face tucked into Adora’s shoulder, Adora gently cradling Catra’s head. Adora is careful not to hug Catra too hard or make her feel restrained, anticipating the moment that Catra will start to pull away — but Catra doesn’t. She hangs on so tightly it hurts, her claws digging through Adora’s jacket and into her back, latching into her like she did when she was a kitten and didn’t know how much her claws could hurt. Adora tries not to wince, tries not to move a single muscle, worried that if she does the spell will break and Catra will struggle away, appalled at having shown weakness.
But Catra doesn’t let go. And so neither does Adora.

"Catra." She says firmly, eyes flying up to the other woman’s face. "I wouldn't choose anyone in the world to be stuck with after an alien invasion other than you. If the world were normal, I'd still wish for us to meet. No matter the circumstances ... I want this."
Adora doesn't move her hand, but she keeps her touch light enough that Catra can pull away if she wants to. "If you don't feel the same, it'll be alright. But I need you to know." Adora will put on a brave face, even if the thought of not having Catra makes her want to die.
Catra's holding her, one arm wrapped tightly around her waist. "I—fuck." She curses, her voice charged. "Adora, you're my miracle. I can't believe that I found you against all odds. And if I had the chance to save the whole world from these stupid worm aliens but I'd have to give you up—" She sighs. "I wouldn't do it."
Adora's heart thunders in her chest at the declaration. "That's wrong." She points out, but she's smiling as she does it.
Catra smiles back, eyes warm. "Super fucked up, but no less true."
OR
Glimmer, an alien, is implanted in Adora's body. They find their way back to Adora's family. The Host AU.

"I am your Adora." The words burst out of her without permission, much like the lump in her throat. "I'm just...I'm older. Much older if I had to guess." Catra is at an age where it's hard to tell if she's in her mid-twenties or thirties but she's vibrant and full of life.
"Fuck, really?" She groans kicking a rock next to her. "This is really fucking annoying. The portal was supposed to short circuit distance, not time." Catra slumps over against a tree, leaning her head against it. She then eyes Adora curiously. "What's up with you and all the staring?" She smirks, one of her ears twitching. "Am I on some far-off diplomatic trip with Sparkles? I bet you hate that."
She shakes her head slowly, not sure what to even say. "I—Catra." The tears spring to her eyes now, not much she can do about it. "You're—You've been gone."
Her ears pin back and she stares at Adora, understanding marring her face. "I'm dead?"
OR
Catra dies and Adora has to live with the grief of it all. Dead Catra AU.
