Starting off at the end of Season 4, The truth behind Vecna, The Mindflayer, and the Upside Down is finally unveiled after Kali escapes Hawkins National Labs and finds Jane. After Jane and Mike reach an inevitable breakup, tensions run high in the Wheeler household as Will and Jonathan move in. The group realizes they're up against much more than they ever thought, and must find a way to close off the upside down--trapping the Mindflayer inside forever and bringing the end to a parasitic hivemind.

“When I saw you… there. From the Demo’s perspective. You were gonna –” Will’s voice breaks, and Mike’s fingers twitch where they rest on the fabric of Will’s jeans. There’s no conscious thought process, but he gently rubs back and forth. “I thought of you,” Will whispers, breath catching slightly.
“Of us. When… um, when we first met, and you asked me to be your friend. I thought of that and… you know. It happened."
Mike’s eyebrows lift. Me. I did it. “Oh.”
Will glances and seems to realise all at once how much he just revealed.
aka after their graduation dnd game, will and dustin persuades everyone to go to stacy's house party. mike is not exactly in the mood, and wonders if drinking will help everything that he's feeling right now. what could go wrong? what could go right?

“We have to kill him,” Mike finishes fiercely, and for a second, Will pictures him in full paladin gear, making the same speech in a castle, or a magical forest, or a dark dungeon. He’s every bit the boy Will’s always known, the one who stands up for his friends and his principles and never, ever backs down. Even when the odds are against them. Even when they’re impossible.
Will swears that he can feel electricity crackling in the air, Mike’s last sentence settling on the group like a physical weight. Everyone looks impressed: Jonathan, Hopper, even Owens. Will knows the look on his own face must be incredibly obvious, incredibly stupid.
He doesn’t care. That’s the Mike he knows. That’s the Party’s leader.
That’s the boy Will fell in love with.

“It doesn’t matter if it takes a hundred more crawls,” Mike says, planting his hands against the table. “A thousand! We don’t stop until we’re goddamn sure that wrinkled, rotting, noseless bastard is dead and gone and never coming back.”
Will’s smiling, now, looking reassured. And Mike’s saying it for El’s sake, but also Will’s. Max’s. Eddie’s, too. Everyone who’s been hurt by this monster, who won’t be able to sleep at night with even the slimmest chance that he might still be out there.
He has to do something. And until there’s a better plan, or more information to go off of, this is the only option.
He puts his hand out above the table. “Everyone in?”
Lucas, looking determined, slaps his palm on top of Mike’s. Then Will. Then, when there’s only one of them left, they turn to look at Dustin.
Dustin’s mouth twitches to the side. His torn Hellfire shirt ripples in the late-autumn breeze. “I want to see Vecna’s heart on a platter,” he says. His voice is low, almost scarily detached. Like he has nothing left to lose. “Just wish I could do it myself.”
