The sundered had ridiculous notions about the relationship between love and the soul.
‘He’s my soulmate,’ they would say. ‘She’s the other half of my soul.’ As though souls were poured into vessels and then repoured precisely so that half of any given soul ended up in one newly born individual and the other in someone else, simply waiting to be reunited and fall in love without needing to put in any of the work involved in building familiarity and trust with another person.
Nonsense. Every one of them was a discrete entity, as distinct from one another as the individual flowers composing a meadow. Each of a slightly different hue, unique, but altogether as common and unremarkable as asphodels.
There were so many things these warped abominations would never understand.

She’s taller than him, which makes a pang of jealousy echo through his chest, but he doesn’t need to be tall to stare her down, baring his teeth until she finally gets the hint and breaks eye contact, shuffling away.
Chuuya can feel the rumble of a laugh in Dazai’s chest behind him, suppressed only because the girl is still in hearing range. Or maybe because Chuuya would turn his irritation on him.
Dazai steers him towards the cash registers, hands firm on his shoulders. “You know, it’s cute when you get all possessive, but try not to bite too hard, okay? I like this store.”

Which, when explained at a comprehensive level, might seem a bit preposterous— Ferdinand understands this. But no scholar in the history of the Empire has studied the royal families like he has, the ties and entanglements that kept people together for hundreds, if not thousands of years.
Sometimes, Ferdinand’s hunches are just little feelings, like reading a story of two advisors who lived identical lives almost a thousand years apart, or seeing familiar faces in Court portraits. And sometimes, it’s just meeting a huffy man on a bench who refuses to say a single nice thing to Ferdinand, even when he pays for both of their drinks.
