It starts with a dumb joke between him and Dickie. Dickie told him something he found so stupid, stupid enough that he took the bet, don’t talk to Will or contact him at all in any way for one day. Just one day. It should have been easy, but Mack almost lost his mind when he realized the first person he contacted every day was Will. Not being able to tell Will he was back almost made him pay the bet to Dickie immediately.

Summary
In July, Will Smith is traded to Calgary.
He sits across from his coach and nods in the right places and says the right things, and the whole time the floor is quietly dropping out from underneath him. Prior to this, he had a plan. San Jose. The rebuild. A future he'd let himself believe in without ever saying out loud who was at the center of it.
He texts Mack that night. He waits two hours. Yeah. That sucks. But you'll be good up there.
Nine words. From the person who has been the fixed point of his life for years now. And then silence, the kind that doesn't stop, that stretches through August and September and October while Will settles into a furnished Calgary apartment with a hollow feeling he's gotten very good at carrying. He stops checking for Mack's name on his phone sometime in August.
The Sharks come to Calgary for a game on a Tuesday in November. Will has not been thinking about it for six weeks. It's just a game. He's fine.
Then he gets hurt, and he opens his eyes, and Mack is already there.

Mack has been hiding his crush since the end of his first season with the Sharks. It boils over at the start of their second season when he cannot survive another road trip circuit of sharing rooms with Will and pretending they're just besties.
M/M. Hockey universe. They're both Golden Retriever boyfriends. Ok, maybe Will is a bit more of a German Shepherd boyfriend. Instant emotional burn - the yearning was pre-story. Slow burn on the plot progression.

Before they head back out, Will bumps his shoulder into Mack. “You good?” he asks, immediately regretting the vague phrasing. Will wanted to be specific about the hits, the hesitation. Don’t say you didn’t grimace, Celebrini. I see you.
The thought stalls Will’s brain and he barely acknowledges Mack’s, “Yeah, of course.”
OR
Mack gets hurt and misses Christmas. Will misses Mack and isn't handling it well. They don't really talk about it.
