Summary
With skyscrapers a half-mile high, beautiful rooftop arboretums, and interconnecting sky bridges linking them together, the city was a Heaven on Earth—for those lucky enough to afford it. For Dean and thousands of not-so-lucky others, the buildings stretched up into the sky like menacing giants, blocking out the sun. There, in the dark grimy underbelly of the city, where chaos and corruption reigned, Dean and his brother Sam hunted down rogue androids called Aberrants.
Castiel was created to be the perfect soldier by Edlund Industries (a leader in bioengineering and robotics), but after failing to obtain a government contract due to public backlash over corporate-owned human clones, his garrison was reassigned to other jobs within the company. Castiel took pride in his job as a cybersecurity investigator and served Edlund Industries with unquestioning loyalty, until two vigilante heroes crashed into his life, shattering his sheltered existence.

Summary
“I wish I knew what you looked like,” D-Dean says and he’s interrupting the voice on phone. The man’s in the middle of explaining something—something about him becoming human (isn’t he human already?), something about an asshat named Dean who threw him out onto the streets, something about why Castiel’s always afraid, always wary not to stay too long even though he wishes that he could.
But Dean doesn’t know what it means.
The man’s voice is quiet, quiet a lot, but he says, “There’s a family picture in Sam’s phone.”
It takes him a while, a lot of Cas explaining to him who Sam is (he forgot again), a lot of explaining that yes, his name’s Dean and that he’s not Sam. A lot of explaining, a lot of whispered things that are gentle and make Dean feel good.
But then he finally sees the picture.

Summary
After his crimes committed in Heaven and on Earth, Castiel expected a swift execution. Naomi could have just left him in Purgatory to die, but she was the kind to tidy up loose ends rather than let monsters eat them. A clean death in Heaven was preferable to evisceration in Purgatory, but Castiel feared the Winchesters might also be two loose ends Naomi would try to ‘tidy up’.
Instead of the Heavenly firing squad, however, Naomi decreed that Castiel would return to earth to protect his friends from harm. He would be their assigned guardian angel and Heaven would leave the three of them alone from now on.
Oh, but make no mistake. This was a punishment, not a reward. Because Naomi set a condition.
(Divergent from somewhere in Season 8/9, though not necessarily where it appears to be at first. Timelines may seem screwed up initially but this is entirely deliberate - well most of it is deliberate, though errare humanum est and all that)
