Summary
There's a lot of expectation attached to Steve Rogers' name. It's taken him years to prove his own worth - that he's made it so far in the USNA on his own merit and not just because of his father. He's close though - there are only a few more months until he graduates and gets to stand on his own two feet. It's taken a lot of effort to get there, and a lot of sacrifices.
Bucky's beyond the point of expectation. When your father and grandfather have both been President - and your mother nurses political ambitions of her own - brilliance is a foregone conclusion. He's just counting down the final months of his confinement to the glass cage of the White House and he's determined to put that whole world behind him.
But as the days standing between them and their dreams dwindle, Steve comes to realize he might have made one sacrifice too many, and Bucky learns that his freedom comes at a cost he's never going to be able to pay.

Summary
When Steve's dad is diagnosed with cancer, Steve returns to his childhood home to support his mom -- a small town called Gold Cliff, Colorado. Ten years before, he left Gold Cliff behind him, left his no-longer-best-friend Bucky Barnes behind him, with the intention of never seeing him ever again. But Bucky Barnes crash-lands back into his life nonetheless, long-haired and one-armed and haunted, keeping secrets from day one.
Filled with self-loathing and millennial angst, they agree to a mutually beneficial sexual relationship to blow off steam.

"NO! I WANNA GO HOME!" James barked, balling up his fists. The air was hot and muggy and the noise of people shouting to one another and walking on the uneven road were making his ears ring and his blood boil. He felt far too warm and dizzy and every brush of someone walking past him felt like a match strike, like he was about to burst into flames at any moment.
"BUCKY! WE JUS' GOT HERE!" Steve barked back, stamping his foot on the ground before grabbing his wrist again. "I WANNA-"
James didn't mean to shove Steve to the ground. Nor did he mean to scream his lungs out loud enough to scare the birds out of the sky.
