He couldn’t help but smile as the man before him blanched, looking much less confident than he had five seconds ago. “Hey, Gid. This nice fella was just askin’ me for directions to the nearest inn, weren’t ya, friend?”
“Y-yeah,” the man stammered, “I was. C-couldja just tell me, and— and I’ll be gone…”

After decades of running from his personal tormentor, he’d become adept at picking out the slightest growl in a hurricane; he was ever vigilant, watching for the slightest glint of red in the night or the swish of a shaggy tail.
As he heard the bounding getting closer, his heart beat in time with the rapid approach of the beast. He only had a split second to react and in that split second he pushed Daisy out of the way of the glittering jaws.
He now found himself directly in the trajectory of the wolf’s maw, its knife-like teeth digging into his shoulder. The wolf bit through his soft flesh and into his shoulder blade, taking a firm hold of its prey. Skrimm screamed out as the growling beast shook him from side to side.---
