Modern AU, capable Wei Ying. A little lengthy at times; I just skimmed the final chapters for key scenes, but still a good read. The strong points for me were the depiction of Wei Ying's character, and of an abuser (and the abuse they commit) without reframing abuse into 'tough love' or 'tough parenting'. Overall, the narrative evolves around the corrosive effects of sustained familial abuse on the abused and people close to them, and a plot unfolding in a 'corporate' AU. Wangji is 'labelled' a man but the characterisation doesn't support it (pretty much confirmed by the latter part of the story). For me, the story wouldn't have needed this or the mpreg trope to push Wei Ying towards change; it seemed to diminish his effort along with Wangji's importance for Wei Ying. I found the use of four-letter slang or the fanservice elements unnecessary. Make of it what you will. Overall, I found it different and original enough to be readable, and I always like stories with a tough, capable Wuxian.

There are quite a few people who would say that Wei Ying does not make a plan for anything. They see his go-with-the-flow attitude, his tendency to jump into situations with every angle only half-thought out and considered, his cocky grin when he says “I’ll figure it out when I get there” and they think:
This man does not plan a single goddamn thing. This man has never come up with a plan in his life, let alone followed one to the end.
[ OR: WWX boards a spaceship, takes a hostage and steals the resources he needs. None of which goes according to plan.]

I read it because of its unusual angle, credible characterisations for Wei Ying and Wangji, and a happy ending for WangXian. It's a rewrite rather than filling in of the canon, and therefore omits much of the tragedy and horrors that shape WangXian. A bit lengthy at times especially in the latter part; I skimmed some of it to get to what felt like key scenes. Unfortunately, it seems to contain several uncredited 'borrowings' from other people's writings (too many to be probable coincidence, including certain phrasings and symbols) who are also made quite central to the story.

“I have three dogs, two degrees, and a Maserati,” he says through gritted teeth.

Wei Ying’s garden café has run out of cash and he’s broken up with his on-and-off boyfriend again (maybe for good this time), but that’s okay because he has an irresistibly adorable son and a rich, high-powered, super little brother who’ll always have his back.

modern wangxian melancholy, first person wuxian pov, different; a thoughtful and original story that stands really well on its own terms, without 'easy' solutions for every conflict - wangxian have to work for it; Wei Ying is tough and sweet and vulnerable but strong, just as i like reading about him. one of the very very few fanfictions where i find jiang cheng credible as a reformed character (compared to his canon version).
