Clementine has accepted death ever since AJ killed his first walker. She knew she would die peacefully knowing that he was fully capable to defend himself. This reassurance grew when they found a home in the abandoned school. So when the time came for her to say goodbye, she was fully prepared. AJ, however, was not. So, he took it upon himself to write a new ending to the narrative.
