"Wet hair slapped against her forehead as her hands clamped down around the exposed pipe, a phantom warmth shielding her back. A knot formed, deep in her gut, swirling as angrily as the sky above them thundered, tendrils of grief reaching and wringing its ugly presence into the forefront of her mind. Metallic shrieking echoed around them, or were those people? Her ears mixed the noises together, her brain fried beyond comprehension as adrenaline rushed through her body, sinking deep into her bones, Her lungs felt like they were on fire and she could taste the way the mud in the air captured the static electricity around them. She felt like she was about to die."
Five years is not enough time to process grief when all you're used to doing is running from the feelings it comes with.

The bard held up a finger, pointed behind Geralt before very quickly tossing the knife he'd been holding over Geralt's shoulder. The Witcher stayed facing the bard even after he heard a pained gurgle and the hollow sound of a skull hitting the ground behind him.
"We have a room. I suppose it'll be much easier to explain there."

That sometimes when he hears a lute strumming in his proximity he jumps out of his skin, eager to see him wearing his bright colored doublets like a peacock. That when he turns on the road, he half expects him to groan a complaint about how long they’ll finally set their camp. That more often than not he still talks to him, something he didn’t do enough when he had the chance.
